[atrb=valign, top] 22 FEMALE HOENN GYM LEADER BISEXUAL NEUTRAL | [atrb=valign, top][atrb=style, border-left:1px solid #515151;] “The fires of the heart illuminate this battlefield as we blaze a trail through to the future and beyond! Lavaridge Gym Leader, Flannery Moore, has arrived, so prepare, puny trainer, to feel the intense fury and passion of my burning spirit! AHAHAHAHA!” Having been a Gym Leader for a number of years, Flannery has grown into the role, and now her natural fiery personality (pun intended) has asserted itself; no longer is she attempting to be someone that she isn’t, or worrying about making her grandfather proud, or anything else…anything else at all, in fact. Whilst she has not fully matured – she lacks any kind of composure or self-restraint, and has energy that would put a sugar-fuelled five year old to shame - Flannery has grown in confidence and ability over the years as she has adapted into her role, and she has become far more relaxed in this sense: it’s fine to make mistakes, and even to lose. You just get up and keep going! Flannery is possessed of the sort of self-confidence (some might say overconfidence; the line is a little blurry) that one is who is completely content with their life and their personality has, and this is really all one needs to know about her in order to figure out the rest for themselves. What is on the surface with Flannery is often what is below the surface, as well: she has no hidden agenda, or secret shames, or things she wants to keep hidden from the world. She is who is she is, nothing more or less, and to pretend otherwise would only make her unhappy. Flannery is the kind of woman who people will either adore or find absolutely insufferable: possessed of an endless supply of optimism and energy, with a flair for the dramatic that would be ridiculous coming from anyone else, and completely lacking any kind of “off switch” or anything similar, being around Flannery does not permit for any kind of pessimism…she will be down your throat so fast that it’d make an Arcanine look like a Slowpoke if she spots even a hint of it. Flannery, despite her carefree (some might say childish, although she is not given to sulking or complaining) nature, is highly perceptive, and will not stand by and allow others to feel any kind of negative emotion in her presence. They WILL enjoy life, even if she has to tie them to a chair and tickle them into submission! Well, perhaps she wouldn’t go quite that far, but with Flannery, one can never know exactly what is running through her mind at any given time…if that was what it took, she’d probably do it. Flannery can, at times, appear to be quite tactless or selfish because of this attitude, although she only has the best interests of the other person at heart: sadness of any kind reminds her of her grandfather’s death, and her own spell of depression, and despite her close friendships, she went through her grief alone. Flannery, really, just wants to be there for people, and sets an example in her constant cheer. Life is too short to be upset about anything. Happiness is something that everyone should be able to have, and she has plenty of it in her life to go around. Flannery was raised to care about others around her, and to make the most of bad situations, and she does both wholeheartedly; she doesn’t know how to be any other way. Sadness and anger are intense, but brief: she gets it out of her system and moves on. No sense dwelling on the past. Despite her practicality, Flannery is shockingly naïve. If she is told something with sufficient gravity, no matter how ridiculous it is, the chances are that she will believe it, until it’s either proven to be incorrect or she is told it is incorrect by the person who told her, or someone that she trusts more than the one who told her. Her collection of lucky charms (ranging from jewellery to common garden variety rocks), coins, and her golden-egg laying Magikarp is mute testament to this far too trusting aspect of her nature. She is often the butt of other people’s jokes, and sarcasm tends to fly over her head, although in recent years she has begun to wise up a little, and use this element of her character to her advantage: people underestimating her do so at their own peril. She is still clueless and trusting, but she is learning, as one does the more one is exposed to the world. She will not follow others blindly, but she doesn’t need a good reason to follow: she will do so because it feels right, or because she likes the individual. She doesn’t stop to ask questions until much later, meaning that she is prone to making very bad decisions…or, to put it as she might, decisions that might not be as good at achieving her goals as other decisions she might have taken, but worked out alright anyway, so it doesn’t really matter. Whilst Flannery is not solely an “ends justifies the means” kind of person – she has a definite moral compass, and won’t take the quickest route if it will cause others any kind of pain or setback – if things all work out alright, then she doesn’t really mind so much. Something COULD have gone wrong, but it didn’t, and that is what matters. Whilst she is not stupid, Flannery is far from worldly: a woman who has had precious little time to travel, owing to her duties as a Gym Leader, as well as a general fear of travelling: she is not overly fond of flying, and has the aversion to the sea that one would expect of a fire-type trainer. She has been out of Hoenn a grand total of three times in her life to date, and has no desire to leave her home region in the near future: the climate of other regions doesn’t agree with her, and travel sickness is frequently a problem. Flannery is a girl who loves the town she grew up in and has no desire to explore the wider world…at least, not now that she’s had a taste of it and found its left something of a bitter aftertaste. It’s not that exciting after all. This attitude means that Flannery does not know quite as much about the world at large as her confident manner would imply. In fact, she’s flying blind, a Winona, her closest friend, might put it. Flannery has a magnetic personality, and she is attracted to those who exert a similar self-confidence, no matter their age or gender: many of her idols and crushes are old enough to be her grandparent, or of a similar temperament to her…that is to say, loud and overconfident. She falls in love hard and fast, but gets over it just as quickly with minimal pain: perhaps it would be more accurate to say she idolizes people, rather than falls in love with them, although she certainly confuses the feelings enough and, Flannery being Flannery, takes it to extremes. Flannery is a woman of action; words are just catalysts, or something you say to make you look cool. Like shouting out Pokémon attacks, or catchphrases; it makes the moment that much more memorable. This can make her seem frightfully spontaneous at times to others who don’t know her and, indeed, perhaps she doesn’t think things through as often as she should, especially for a Gym Leader: she doesn’t learn from her mistakes, or even acknowledge she’s made them much of the time: that would be admitting defeat, and if circumstances take a bad turn, you don’t say “Oh well” and move on, you work at them until they’re back how you want them. Stubborn and hard-headed, Flannery doesn’t like admitting that she is wrong, but this is only because she doesn’t like looking at the world in such terms: things are what they are, but they are what you want them to be, too. But they’re what others want them to be too, so…see, this is why she doesn’t bother with words; all these confusing meanings and not-meanings. It’s life, so just live it. Flannery’s capabilities come through her ignorance of when a situation is dire for her as much as her skill as a trainer: never give up, push through the pain, and emerge victorious. This is an attitude she would maintain even when facing Arceus itself with nothing but a Magikarp, and the creed by which she leads her life: ever the optimist, Flannery pushes through life by sheer force of will, and leaves it to others to think about things. There will be time enough for that when she’s as older…perhaps. Some might describe Flannery as a comeback specialist: she isn’t out until her Pokémon is knocked out, and is more than capable of taking a pummelling and then coming back and wiping the floor with whoever faces her if they aren’t careful. “Defeat” is not a word in Flannery’s vocabulary, not even when she’s been beaten. A very emotional person, Flannery wears her heart on her sleeves, and is not afraid to say exactly what she is thinking or feeling: she is without shame or fear, for what is the worst that can happen? People can either accept her as she is, or they don’t; it’s not her problem to deal with, and she can’t be anyone other than who she is. She keeps her friends extremely close to her heart – her closest friend being Winona, the Fortree Gym Leader – and is passionate about protecting that which she holds dearest. Flannery doesn’t care for complications in life; she lives every second as though it were her last (which, perhaps, shows that she isn’t quite over her grandfather’s death yet) and likes to keep things simple. Simple is best.
