The fact that he was called up for a meeting with the head of the Knights of Arceus could only mean one thing. He was going to get a mission.
To be honest, Eric didn’t know how to feel about this opportunity. Others would’ve loved to have this opportunity, Michael included. He didn’t know why he was chosen. Then again, he was Knight Epsilon. He had worked his way up and here he was now. He was surprised he got the position and a part of him wondered why he got it. He didn’t think he was special.
Recently, especially after his visit to Oldale Town, Eric had his doubts about the Knights. He didn’t really have any loyalty to the Knights and only joined because Michael did. He didn’t tell anyone about this though. That would basically be like asking for a death sentence. Cashel did not like disloyalty and that man scared him. He was powerful and he wasn’t sure he wanted to be on his bad side.
As of late, Eric had not been receiving a lot of missions from Cashel or anyone at all. He’d been allowed to do what he wanted to do as of now and he started to wonder whether that was something to be happy about. Sure a break from work was always awesome, but Eric had a feeling there was something more to it.
Eventually, after working up the courage to enter the office, Eric moved towards the door and knocked. After waiting for a moment, he slowly opened the door and slinked in, not wanting to disturb his boss. He had to put on a brave face and he couldn’t show fear. That would be bad, especially in the presence of Cashel.
”You wanted to see me boss?” Eric tried to say confidently, but his voice sounded meeker than he liked it to sound. He tried to maintain the courage to look at Cashel in the eyes and he succeeded, but his eyes shone with uncertainty and worry. It was clear that Eric was uncomfortable.[/style][STYLE=float: left; margin-left: 12px; color: #DFDFDF; background-color: #171717; opacity: 0.8; border-bottom-left-radius: 10px; border-top: 4px solid #0C0C0C; padding: 12px; font-family: arial narrow; font-size: 12px; line-height: 11px; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 1px; width: 109px; height: 320px; overflow: auto; margin-top: 10px;]TAGS: Cashel.
His gaze immediately flitted to the door, the click catching his attention, removing his attention from the papers stacked neatly on his desk. He would never have been caught being idle, the wait for the boy had simply caused him to revert back to his work rather than waste anymore time staring at the door. He believed efficiency was the key after all, to get everything done as quickly as possible with as little draw backs as they could muster.
Which was partially the reason for calling upon his Epsilon. After all, if they wanted to move along with the plans they had to persist in their movements, attack while their opponents were still down to crush them fully.
He nodded to Eric, eyes narrowing slightly at the soft voice, the body language that the male in front of him was showing. But he took it in stride, ignoring it for now until he deemed it necessary. "Yes, I did." He began, pushing himself off his desk, at the same time grabbing a folder marked with an ε symbol written on top. "I think you've had a vacation for long enough, it's time for a bit of field work, Eric." He addressed curtly, actively looking for signs of distress. He would not have signs of hesitancy, not with this particular job.
"You are to take two others with you and destroy Vermillion City. Destruction of the buildings will be enough, be sure to take down the pokemon center first. Anything else you may need to will be in this file." He held the folder for Eric to take.

He stayed firm as he listened to his boss telling him that he had some fieldwork for him to do. That alone made him chew his lip in anxiousness.
His fears were confirmed when Cashel expanded on his orders for Eric. Attacking Vermillion City. This prospect made Eric worry. Not about his possibilities of failure though. Eric was confident in his abilities to carry out the mission successfully. However, Eric wasn’t really sure he wanted to destroy yet another city where innocent people lived. It was a bit extreme to in his opinion, but Eric realized his opinion didn’t really matter.
”Vermillion City…” Eric muttered quietly to himself, his eyes looking a little downwards in thought as he took the file from him. Looking inside of it, there were schematics of the city as well as places where they could enter and escape from. It also highlighted the places that Cashel wanted to be destroyed first as well as people to look out for.
The details of the plans surprised Eric and he couldn’t help but be transfixed by all of the knowledge that Cashel had. The information that Cashel commanded was truly startling and Eric was starting to realize how much power his boss had. It scared him.
Eric took time to organize his thoughts. Who was he going to take with him on this mission? He did not want Michael to go on this mission, owing to the fact he’d be more of a hindrance. He probably should take two of the lackeys, just so that they get experience as well. Even then, there was a question that was nagging Eric.
After taking some time to look in his file and order his thoughts, Eric looked up at Cashel. He felt a little more confident than he did coming in, now knowing why he was called in. While this mission was great, owing to the possibility to battle. It had been a while since he had a good battle. The mission was odd to him though.
”Boss…” Eric started out politely, a little hesitant to speak, but eventually overcoming his anxiety. ”Why do you want to attack Vermillion City? Right now, we have been able to stay hidden and remain practically anonymous for now. By doing this, we are going to get a lot of unwanted exposure. Does the end really justify the means?” Eric asked his boss, pacing around the room as he tried to rationalize this action, but failing to do so.
”Can I also ask how is Professor Birch doing? I assume he is in a safe and well-protected location. Is it possible for me to know where he is? For the sake of extra protection of course.” Eric inquired, gaining a bit more confidence in himself the more he talked to Cashel. He had a hand in the kidnapping of Birch as well as the recruitment of Ruby and Sapphire. Eric felt that it was only fair that he partook in some information regarding his current status.[/style][STYLE=float: left; margin-left: 12px; color: #DFDFDF; background-color: #171717; opacity: 0.8; border-bottom-left-radius: 10px; border-top: 4px solid #0C0C0C; padding: 12px; font-family: arial narrow; font-size: 12px; line-height: 11px; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 1px; width: 109px; height: 320px; overflow: auto; margin-top: 10px;]TAGS: Cashel.
He quietly waited as Eric read through the files, a compilation of past and present data collected by other agents along with Cashel himself. As such the man had taken a bit of pride in this current mission, and he wanted it be done with utmost precision. Losing a few operatives was not within the plan, which was why he had only tasked three of them for the job. If they could catch the city unawares with their small group, there would be less casualties on their side after the execution, which was what Cashel had been going for. He expected the rangers, or any other form of law enforcement, to arrive late on the scene, when the damage was already dealt, and his Knights well out of their range.
However, this hesitancy, was not something he had expected. Nor was it anything to look forward too. He paused at the question, taking his time to look searchingly into Eric's eyes. Reluctance, the presence of it stirred annoyance in him, already there was doubt.
"Are you questioning my methods, Eric?" He asked lightly, a hint of a challenge concealed in his tone. Must he explain himself? True, the blind loyalty others gave was not something he had felt comfortable about, but neither did the query of his inner workings. And true once again, he had not expected it from one of formidable rank such as Eric. Was there something incorrect with how it was he had governed over their organization for such to happen? He'd like to think not, not when steps had been contemplated before hand as their next course of action.
Though he suppose there was no harm in telling Eric the thought process of this particular plan, none that he could foresee anyway. "The time of hiding is nearly over, soon they will know who it is they will fear. We have the Legendary pokemon on our side as well. Secondly, an attack on Kanto's port city will hamper what voyages travels between the regions, ensuring that imports and exports to and fro Kanto will be threatened." He smiled to himself at that thought. In a way, Kanto would be cut off, even if it were only one of it's many modes of transportation. Still, it was a necessary handicap if he planned to keep the world on it's toes. "I'm sure the other region will catch wind of it quickly, when all of a sudden there is one less place for ships to board."
Professor Birch? Now this was getting a bit curious. "He's in Sinnoh." He answered, a smile playfully teasing on his lips. Safe and well-protected? Well that was one way of putting it, especially when the Professor was presumably slowly pining away in detestable surroundings, barely sustained with meager amounts of food and water. "I can assure you that he is alive and hidden from view for now, we can't have him dying and lose an important bargaining chip after all." A smirk, and an amused chuckled, before looking back to Eric with seriousness. "But back to this mission. Can I count on you to get to this as quickly as possible?" His thoughts flitted once more to the hesitancy from earlier, but he held on to the belief that it had been the ride decision to promote this boy, a proficient trainer in his eyes, into an Epsilon.

He chewed his lip hard, nearly drawing blood. He did not look impressed. He really should’ve kept his mouth shut. Yet at the same time, he wanted to know Cashel’s reasoning for attacking Vermillion City. They will gain notoriety and he wasn’t sure that Cashel was aware of that.
Of course Eric was wrong. It seemed that Cashel wanted them to reveal themselves. This made Eric feel really nervous. He had liked the lack of notoriety. It had allowed him to travel wherever he wanted without being recognized. It allowed a freedom that he enjoyed. The thought of that freedom being taken away from him was not something Eric was happy about.
Cashel’s plan was smart. By destroying Vermillion City, Kanto would be cut off from the rest of Pokearth. It would definitely put them on the map and they would be seen as a force to be feared. They would be better than Team Rocket and all those other teams before them. Was that something he wanted to be a part of?
He had to. All of this, everything to do with the Knights of Arceus, All of it was for Michael. If he had a chance to show what he got and that he indeed was a strong person, he needed to do well in this mission. He was going to do well whether it killed him or not.
It was then that Cashel talked about Professor Birch. So he was in Sinnoh. That was useful to know. Eric nodded his head as he took on a pensive look. As long as Birch was safe and in their custody, Ruby and Sapphire was as good as theirs. They were powerful trainers and pokedex holders as well. They were invaluable.
With a newfound determination for impressing Michael, Eric’s eyes took on a look of fierceness absent before. Eric wasn’t going to fail. No way was he going to fail. Not if his life counted on it. He would impress Michael as well as prove his worth as Epsilon in Cashel’s eyes. He was in the Knights; he needed to follow through with his actions and promises.
”I know this boss. You can count on me to get this mission done.” Eric announced to Cashel, looking at him square in the eyes with power. Once he was determined, Eric could do anything.
”I assume I get to choose who goes with me on this mission, no?” Eric asked Cashel as he put the file underneath his arm. There were a lot of grunts to choose from and he knew it would be a hard decision. But he needed the best.[/style][STYLE=float: left; margin-left: 12px; color: #DFDFDF; background-color: #171717; opacity: 0.8; border-bottom-left-radius: 10px; border-top: 4px solid #0C0C0C; padding: 12px; font-family: arial narrow; font-size: 12px; line-height: 11px; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 1px; width: 109px; height: 320px; overflow: auto; margin-top: 10px;]TAGS: Cashel/Grey.
The information he let on about Birch, true as it got, was near useless. Not unless someone was willing to search for entirety of Sinnoh that is. Considering they had made sure to keep that particular warehouse out of the known cities and more onto the 'back side' of Sinnoh... Well, it would be easier if there was a map of some sort. Not that those were lying in the open anywhere.
He pondered for a moment where this new streak of conviction was coming from, appreciating it all the same. All for the success of the mission, after all, a person worked better when filled with some sort of goal. Whether it coincided with the actual goal of the mission, Cashel cared little for, so long as the mission itself was fulfilled.
"Indeed, choose who you consider would do well on this mission. And do try and leave unscathed, as crucial as this task is the odds could easily turn against our favor. " A life wasted was a life he couldn't make use of anymore, and the more men he had to spare, the better it was for future plans. "If you have no more inquiries about the mission then you are free to go. If you would like, you may ask Aphrodite for records of our members and the sort of work-" Which was to say how 'destructive' they were. "- they've accomplished."
With that he retreated for his desk, taking his seat once more, looking at Eric politely to see if he had anymore to say on the matter. This was but step one, still so many left to achieve and ensure.
