With a long sigh, Morty slammed the button on his Pokegear to get it to turn off. With all these crazy ideas, Esuine was going to kill him one day. Addi lifted her head off of her paws, staring up at Morty from where she sat on the rug with wide eyes. With a softer look, Morty reached over and gave her a nice pat on the head before going back to reading his book. It had been a quiet day, apart from Esuine's phone call... but that was just the problem.
"Come on Addi, let's go." Morty mentioned as he slapped the book shut, placing it on his night stand and slipping on his shoes. It was around dusk, so it wouldn't be so light out, but not so dark that the mischievous Ghost types that lived in the area of Ecruteak City wouldn't start causing trouble for people on a late stroll...yet. These ghosts were so unpredictable, he had even captured Malice out late at night once, trying to scare the daylights out of a passing trainer. Addi barked with delight as Morty opened the door to his somber looking home, allowing her to dart out into the dirt paths of the city around them.
"Come on girl, don't act so crazy. You're going to scare somebody doing that." he mentioned as the excted puppy slid on her paws trying to make a turn. Morty couldn't help smiling, Addi just always put him in that type of mood. He normally hated Dark-types, but she was a great exception.
Morty took a moment to look up at the more than somber sky. The painted clouds of gray seemed to be the only ones that ever covered the city, but that may have been because of how all the towers were painted. Thankfully, Esuine hadn't been in town so he wasn't bombarded when he walked out of the door. Why was he even friends with Esuine? He...wasn't to sure.
"This way, we'll go sit on the bench." Morty motioned, his Houndour leading him rather than the other way around. Her excited yips told him she was pleased with the spot he wanted to go to for some peace, but he knew she was excited wherever they were going to go. Once there, Morty sat down and gave the bench a pat. Right away, the Houndour hopped onto the bench and settled the upper part of her body into his lap, letting out a pleased rumble as the Gym Leader scratched between her ears. Even if it didn't look like much, the quiet of a lone dirt path at dusk, was well how the two bonded. You've got nothing to worry about! Soul's pigtails bounced with vigor as she strutted down the street of the usually gloomy Ecruteak. The city itself was rather fascinating, in Soul's eyes -- pretty, historical, adventurous, and all at the same time! She found it so fascinating that Ecruteak had become a rather common ground for her.
Her eyes rose from their concentrated stare at the cobblestone street to meet the level of the horizon. The sun had set! she thought to herself rather absent-mindedly, simply taking note of her surrounding. Again those hazel orbs flickered about, dancing rather erratically before the sudden mew of her Marill caught the young trainer's attention. A nonchalant simper spread across her lips which had already begun to form laugh lines. The mouse Pokemon that had been walking beside her was already tuckered out! "Awe, Rilly! Here, let momma carry you!" Her voice held a prominent matronly tone, and without question or restraint, Rilly raised her stubby arms as Soul lifted her, that bulbous blue tail bouncing around with glee. The two of them were inseparable, and it was quite apparent.
The lone trainer continued to walk along the streets endlessly. What had she even been searching for? Soul herself didn't even quite know what it was about Ecruteak that drew her back time and time again. It surely wasn't the ghostly cabal that ran a muck every night, that was for certain. In fact, with her insecurities getting the better of her, Soul quickly summoned Orville, just in case. "They don't mean any harm!" she chimed, scratching Rilly's ear and comforting the Marill, who was just as familiar with the city as her trainer.
"They just like to pl--OH!"What was that!
A bark sent Soul into a panic as the Girafarig shot off in its direction -- Orville was always eager to battle. Rilly, who was gently weeping in the hands of her wrecked trainer, was whisked off in pursuit of Orville. "Orville!" she called, quite dramatically, as she ran after him.
It wasn't until she turned the bend that she hit her low. The Girafarig stood still, calmed by the presence of a rather ghostly being -- Morty. Soul grinned, a gulp of air gushing out of her mouth without warning. Her nervousness immediately became apparent on her delicate features as her cheeks reddened and her posture stiffened. There's nothing to worry about! she repeated to herself. Lies. Not only was he absolutely adorable in that sweet kind of way that makes a girl want to hold onto a boy tightly and just hug him forever and ever, but he was so heroic! Soul had been fortunate enough to see him in action before!
Oh, wait, how long have I been standing here! In a mental panic, Soul tried to appear more stoic. Instead she just looked incredibly confused. "Hi Morty!"
Oh, that blond hair. And those eyes. They were so piercing, yet so warm! Soul could see the two of them now, with kids and a white picket fence and a happy ending.
"How have you been?" she wondered, though did not expect much news. It wasn't that she saw Morty frequently, it was that she saw Morty more frequently than anyone else in her life. It had been Arceus knows how long since she'd spoken to Gold or Silver or even her own mother. Soul had been doing quite well on her own for a long enough time to the point where she didn't need to see them. Would it be nice? Of course! To see all of her old friends again would be terrific, but she was no longer dependent on anyone.

The normally hyper puppy had suddenly gone defensive, though it was a secret between he and Morty that she couldn't actually do anything to an attacker. When she was young, she had an accident, and that accident she had healed some, but for some reason she couldn't use any of the abilities she had anymore. Though it was a sad thing to think of, neither Morty or Addi minded much. Morty could protect himself, Addi just liked to try and do it for him.
Though when Morty finally looked up, it was indeed no threat to him. A Giraffe Pokemon stood calmly in front of them, and he quickly hushed Addi as he realized who it belonged to, spotting Soul just behind it. Though she looked either blank or...confused...or...something, he couldn't really tell.
"Soul? are you...okay? Sou-" He was interrupted when she greeted him suddenly, and he smiled, sighing as he leaned back against the bench.
"You know it isn't a good idea to just stand there with your head in the clouds. Some of the people here don't exactly believe in leaving the innocent be." he warned lightly, almost, jokingly. Soul was someone he talked to often, and she seemed to be in the city a lot. He certainly appreciated the young beauty, but that was about all he could do. Shaking himself from any further thought about that matter, he let his eyes shift up to lock with hers, since making eye contact normally made a conversation.
"I've been okay, thank you for asking." He thought for a minute, about any note worthy events. Well, thinking back now, he hadn't had the best streak of luck this week.
"Well...come to think about it, I guess you can say I'm sick of Trainer after trainer walking into my gym and barraging my Pokemon with dark-types...but I suppose that's the job." He mentioned bluntly, though he didn't seem all to emotional about it. Noticing she was still standing, he waved her over. "I'm pretty sure I don't bite, it's safe if you want to sit down." he motioned to Addi, and happily moved into his lap in order to make room for the female. She had seen Soul many times before, she visted Morty often, but she loved to smell a girl's scent every once in a while, because hanging around with Morty, all she ever smelled was cologne.
"And how are you Soul? Is your journey going well? I'm always happy to hear about what goes on in other towns and such." he asked, his attention on her, rather than Addi who was shifting to get comfortable in his lap.
"Thanks for looking out for me, I'm sure those ghosts would have really gotten me!" a small hint of sarcasm slipped through her lips as she smirked lightly at the man. Morty was always looking out for her, and Soul appreciated it! She knew very well that she didn't really need it, just a few Ghastly could do her no harm. Looking over at Orville, who stood rather calmly, Soul watched the Girafarig scuffle his hooves on the cobblestone.
She sat, leaving only an inch or so between her and Morty. Soul wondered what it was about being a Gym Leader that attracted her, but she knew that one day becoming one would be fantastic. How Morty couldn't love it, she didn't know. It didn't matter that she didn't really even like battling, going up against a Gym Leader was strictly for fun in her eyes. "See, I think being a Gym Leader would be so neat! Getting to meet so many new people, making a name for yourself, making your Pokemon happy," she looked down at Rilly, whose rounded blue ears twitched with glee as her trainer scratched her head. "it would be so...neat."
"But I see where you're coming from!" Her head bobbed vigorously and Soul looked over at Morty with a smile. It was when there eyes met that she melted. They were so...attractive. Like visual illusions -- the longer you try to decipher them, the harder it was to pull away.
She tore away, running a hand through her hair in embarrassment. "Herm, sorry." she muttered, a nervous grin gracing her porcelain features. Soul could feel her cheeks redden as blood rushed toward them, and, despite her desire, she continued to look away.
"So, any new cases recently?" she quipped, referring to the tracking Morty had been doing. Even she could tell he was pretty passionate about it. Successful, too.
"Hopefully that part of your life is more exciting than the Gym battles!" Oh dear, she was floundering now.
I shouldn't have apologized, she told herself. Was it getting hot outside?

He didn't want to say anything to ruin her pretty illusion, so he wouldn't. He wasn't going to tell her that he sometimes hated the aspects of his job, and that people thought because he was the fourth gym leader in the Johto region, that he was fairly easy to get though. Instead he nodded, leaning back against the bench with one hand at the back of his head.
"It has it's moments I suppose. It's a beautiful vision the way you put it anyway so I'd strive for it if I were you. It's a good thing to have a dream of some sort." He mentioned. Addi watched the two as they made their eye contact, and she watched as Soul became flustered and turned away from him. Looking up at Morty as he kept his gaze on her for a while more, she noted that the man's expression was unreadable. It was either that he wasn't sure what to think, or he was trying to figure out what was going on with the girl beside him. When she asked about any recent cases, he sighed.
"We have been working on one actually." he answered gruffly, seeming to become a little annoyed by the mention of it. It wasn't anything directed towards Soul of course, but he had just become frustrated with it. That was the job, actually.
"One of the Kimono girls has a younger friend who lost her Eevee, and has no idea where it's gone off to. Addi and I have been tracking it for a few days, but its concerning." He looked back at her as he seemed hesitant to mention the next thing he was going to say.
"My clairvoyance hasn't been working either, I don't know why. I'm pretty sure it only happens when I've got something weighing on me." he admitted with a slight half-smile. Of course, something had been on his mind lately, but only (and very unfortunately) his friend Esuine knew what the problem was.
"We'll keep working to find it though. Someone who so desperatly asked for help shouldn't be ignored." he explained, Addi giving a confident bark as if to back up her owner's words. "Now..." his expression became rather serious as he looked at her again.
"Soul, I'd like you to look at me and tell me what's bothering you." he said, hoping that she didn't think she could just suddenly become all...fidgety and not expect him to ask why.
