HISTORY
The farthest back Mat could remember was when he was two years old, making the long trip from Jubilife to Goldenrod with his family. They were forced to relocate, his mother's reasoning being that his grandfather's job required him to move to Goldenrod. It wasn't until years later that he learned that his grandfather was involved some kind of gang, which opened things up for more understanding.
As it turned out, the Garcia's weren't an honest people. Grandpa was hardworking, but 'liked life on the edge.' At least, that's what he told Mat's father when he was Mat's age, so when Mat attempted to learn more about his grandfather, he told him to try not to worry about it. "Just do your thing," he would say. So, Mat never said a word, treating his grandfather like any grandchild should, with respect. Though, he was always curious with his grandfather -- after all, he was an impressive, charismatic, and lovable man. People were always coming around to see him, cramming into their two-bedroom apartment somewhere in the depths of Goldenrod's lower-class areas, talking about God knows what, laughing, and smoking. Eventually, his grandfather detected his grandson's curiosity, and tried reeling him into the gang-life -- even an old man had his connections, apparently. However, Mat's father discovered these plans, and immediately sent Mat back to Sinnoh. His destination was Snowpoint City, where he was to stay with his uncle on his mother's side.
In Snowpoint, life was much better. Uncle Vlad was wealthy, supplying his nephew with whatever he needed. The boy learned to love the snow, and began training Pokemon almost immediately. He kept in touch with his parents, but it wasn't enough. Despite the perks, Mat yearned to return to Goldenrod.
Months later, the natural disasters began to strike. Blizzards would bury him and his Uncle in for days at a time, though the ice-loving, experienced snow people were always prepared, and there were never any real complications. However, things went differently in Johto, and Mat immediately began packing to return.
When he returned, like Goldenrod, Mat was devastated. Both of his parents, as well as his grandfather, were among the casualties. He sought to return to Snowpoint, but was intercepted by a man. He was familiar looking, and Mat recognized him as one of his grandfather's friends. The man informed him that his Uncle would not be able to give him what "he was born to do" and attempted to recruit Mat into his grandfather's old gang. Though he did refuse, it got him thinking.
Mat took the opportunity that these disasters were into his own hands, and began masquerading as a medium to give people closure with their lost ones. After all, if he was going to upkeep the family name, he had to do it right, right?
OTHER
Mat isn't a real medium. It is, obviously, a hoax, and he intends on using the profits to make a name for himself in the training world, possibly to one day assist in the battle with the Knights. He is a good boy, but he has some less-than-pure tendencies.
