Hugh is practically falling asleep on Zephyr’s back as they fly over the north end of Aspertia City, over the lookout. The wind against his face has almost been numbed out entirely, and only the occasional, powerful downstroke of his Braviary’s wings keep him holding on to consciousness and saving him from falling to the ground. ”Almost there…” he murmurs to himself, as though making an attempt to awken. ”Just a little bit further…” He’s tired. He’s been travelling most of the day, a good portion of it across water on the back of Tallulah or through the air as he is now on Zephyr, alternating pokemon to give them each a break.
He’s kept himself tense as though waiting for someone to strike him out of the air at any moment. Then again, how else should he be? He’s heard the rumors of terrible natural disasters taking place everywhere – even in Aspertia – so he knows he can’t be too careful. Hugh opens his red eyes when his bird pokemon begins to descend, trying to see what his home-city looks like. It’s too dark, though, and all he sees are large, black shapes of things around the city. Tomorrow, he tells himself When it’s daylight out.
The Braviary lands in front of the building he doesn’t need a light to recognize as his home, and Hugh hops off the pokemon’s back, stumbling slightly as feeling in his legs rushes back after being folded up for the past hour and a half. He returns the Braviary in a flash of light, only to release another pokemon in return. The Chandelure hovers right next to him, casting its eerie purple light on the door for him to see. ”Thanks, Azar…” Hugh says, fishing the key out of his bag for the first time in years and inserting it into the lock.
”Return.” The pokemon retreats to its pokeball when summoned, and Hugh drops the ball in his bag before going back to the lock, no longer in need of light to find the keyhole. He jiggles the key left and right, getting only a few millimeters of movement from each side. Oh just perfect. his tired mind grumps, Even now it still gives me a pain. He works the key a bit more vigorously. C’mon, I’ll wake mom, dad, and sis up. About thirty seconds later, as though getting bored of his troubles and relenting, the key finally turns.
Hugh sighs and pulls it out, swallowing once before turning the handle of the door and pushing it open slowly, waiting to put the key back in his pocket before stepping forward across the threshold.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0px,true][atrb=cellpadding,0px,true][style=float: left; width: 250px; font-family: calibri; font-size: 8pt; text-align: justify; padding: 5px]It had been a quiet day, and an even quieter night for both Kalula and her Pokemon. They hadn't even done any training today, for crying out loud! But, this didn't seem to bother the young pig-tailed trainer, who as of that moment, was sleeping soundly in her bed. Though it wasn't too cold, she always had her two forms of warmth around her. The first was Kleo, her Liepard and who could have been very well counted as her first Pokemon, given to her by her older brother. On her other side, rested Abosu, a tough looking Absol who in all truthfulness, wasn't as tough as his look would show people. He was more like a giant puppy following his owner around if nothing else.
Kalula let her eyes open just a bit as she decided she couldn't sleep any longer. Sure, it was the middle of the night, but she had too many things on her mind. She gently placed a hand against Kleo's spotted fur, rounding small circles against the Pokemon's back. She could hear a faint purr rise from the she-cat's throat as one of her mustard-creme colored paws splayed out on the pillow beside her. But a smile suddenly turned to a frown when she thought of Hugh's room across the hall, empty once again. It had been a long time since she had seen him around, and no matter how much she wished there was nothing to change that.
A growl suddenly rose fro Abosu's throat as he lifted his snow-white head. There was something going on, Kalula just couldn't tell what. She sat up in her bed, rubbing her eyes as Kleo was now disturbed out of her sleep too.
"Abosu what's the matter?" She asked, her voice still sounding sleepy from being unused for a couple of hours. She figured it had to be the door. Abosu had good senses, so if something was going on downstairs, he'd know of it. The worst part was her mother and father were at a convention, so she was all by herself. Quickly slipping out of bed and grabbing a bat from the corner of her room, she headed towards the stairs with Abosu and Kleo in pursuit. Before either Pokemon could stop her she flew down the stairs witht he bat in hand and slid into the foyer room. "Get out of my house you robb-" she suddenly froze as she realized who had just stepped through the door. In fact, the young teen couldn't even find words for him, her brother, that stood there in front of her. It was really him! Abosu and Kleo, now fully down the stairs, had relaxed upon seeing Hugh for themselves, and each sat idly on their hind quarters while Kalula stood speechless. Finally, when she found some kind of action, she rushed to him.
"Hugh!" She would nearly bowl him over though she was a lot shorter than he himself.
"Hugh I've missed you! where did you go?!" All this seemed to flood out of her at once as she tried to comprehend the fact that her brother was really there with her.[/style] [style=margin-top: 6px; width: 100px; height:100px; float:right; font-size: 7pt; font-family: calibri; font-weight: bold; text-align: center; border: 5px solid #fefefe]
The voice he hears makes him start slightly, causing his heart to miss a beat. The dim light left on in the living room sheds just enough to reveal a small silhouette with a bat ready to strike. ”Hey!” Hugh says, almost at the same time the other one spoke. His arms rise defensively within a second of sensing a potential threat from the bat-holder, but it quickly evaporates when their – her – voice trailed off. No way… he recognizes it. It’s changed tone over the past few years, definitely, but the very base of the voice is the same as it was when she was younger. …Kalula?
His questioning thought is answered when she shouts his name, catching him entirely off guard when she rushes for him, nearly sending him flying backwards in the process. ”Ack!” his exclamation is partly from sheer surprise of the sudden action, and partly from the pain that erupted across his chest when her head, just about level with it, collided with him in her tackle-hug. He stumbles backwards in a desperate attempt to balance himself and prevent he and his beloved sister from falling over, and by some grace he manages to do so, keeping his heels rooted on the floor.
Her questions, as he should have expected, burst like water from a dam that had been waiting too long before overpowering its barrier. ”Kalula,” Hugh murmured, a rarely-seen soft smile gracing his features, ”I’ve missed you so much.” He wraps his arms around her narrow shoulders, pulling her closer to him in a hug that could only begin to make up for the years they’d missed together, ignoring the pain radiating from his torso. Anything for his sister.
”I’m sorry for leaving you for so long…” he tells her, meaning each word, ”…but it was something I felt as though I needed to do…I’ve been in Sinnoh this entire time.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0px,true][atrb=cellpadding,0px,true][style=float: left; width: 250px; font-family: calibri; font-size: 8pt; text-align: justify; padding: 5px]She liked that he could be honest with her. There was no skirting around where he had been or why he had been there, he said it straight out. Sinnoh? At the very least he had been safe. Kleo and Abosu exchanged glances with one another. They both knew that she had been very worried about her brother on more than one occasion. Sometimes she'd sit up for half the night with Abosu, asking him if he could sense if Hugh was alright. Though Abosu couldn't sense disaster that was all the way in another region.
She enjoyed being back in her brother's arms, so it nearly hurt her to pull away. She could note the slight pained look on his face, though she couldn't tell what it was from. Has she held onto him too tightly? But she was a lot smaller than him, so she doubted she could possibly hold onto him that tightly. She tried to figure this out but gave up a while after, instead glancing back up at her brother with wide eyes.
"Hugh...couldn't you at least have told me where you were going?" She mentioned, the hurt in her voice pretty obvious even if she tried to conceal it. "I worried about you a lot..." Her near crimson eyes darted away, unlocking her gaze from his. There was her being selfish again. He could go wherever he wanted, and he didn't need to tell her if he hadn't to.
"I wish I could tell Mom and Dad you were here, but they went to a convention." She explained, recovering her voice and trying to avoid the fact that she had said what she did in the first place. Her eyes lowered as Kleoparda came to her side, inspecting Hugh since she to had not seen him in a while.
"Are you thirsty? How about hungry?" Suddenly, the care and love for her brother kicked in, and she realized in all this she hadn't thought of asking him if he needed anything. Worrying about her own feelings...had he needed something, would she really have remembered to ask him? She tried to smile, but it was one laced in pain. She knew he was truly sorry for leaving her like he did, but she couldn't find the means to smile without her other emotions kicking in. [/style] [style=margin-top: 6px; width: 100px; height:100px; float:right; font-size: 7pt; font-family: calibri; font-weight: bold; text-align: center; border: 5px solid #fefefe]
He leans back slightly, placing his hand lightly on the top of her head when she pulls away, brushing his thumb against her bangs when she looks up at him. She’s grown so much. he thinks, realizing that in his time away she’s turned into a more of a teenager than when he left. She’s grown up in his absence. He frowns when he hears the unmistakable hurt in his sister’s voice, biting down on his lip in an attempt to prevent his guilt from worsening. ”I’m sorry...” he murmurs, running his hair down the back of her head briefly, ”I should have told you, mom, and dad. At least a bit more than a letter promising I was alright.”
He bites his lip, ”I thought that would be enough.” The teen shrugs sheepishly, embarassed by the fact that he actually thought a letter once every handful of months would be enough to keep his family at home satisfied while he was away, practically having vanished without a trace after giving his sister her Liepard back. He glances up, seeing it sitting on the stairs now. You seem to be settling in well. He muses, making a note to get more in-touch with the pokemon after he gets a full nights rest.
”I’ll just have to see Mom and Dad when they come back from their convention. We can call them tomorrow morning when we wake up.” he says, a small smile on his lips when the Liepard comes forward and examines him more closely. Looking back up at her, he shakes his head to respond. ”No, no...” he murmurs, telling himself she doesn’t need to concern herself with him. ”I’m not –“ He’s cut off as his stomach growls loudly, complaining that it hasn’t had food in more than twelve hours.
Hugh’s spikey-haired head hangs, and he sighs reluctantly, ”You must be the only person I can’t lie to. I’ll just get proven wrong somehow.” He raises his free hand to curl his fingers over his jacket. ”I haven’t eaten practically all day. I’m starving.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0px,true][atrb=cellpadding,0px,true][style=float: left; width: 250px; font-family: calibri; font-size: 8pt; text-align: justify; padding: 5px]For all the emotions she did hide, her smile was warm as her brother's stomach rumbled when he tried to deny the fact that he was hungry in the first place. It was good that he couldn't lie to her, because she didn't lie to him. With a teasing glanced, she went to grab hold of his wrist to drag him into the kitchen.
"Maybe you just aren't as slick as you thought, if you haven't eaten all day, let's go eat!~" she mentioned with a tone that hinted she was joking during the first part of her sentence. She turned back, remembering they had remolded the kitchen slightly since he had left.
Though, there were a couple of things that had changed in Hugh's absence, and nothing involved Kalula's cooking skills. No, they were still really unstable despite their mother's efforts to teach her and guide her through it. So she would look for something simple, something she knew how to make with no issue.
"I was practicing a Shadow Ball in the house once and the kitchen got all messy and they had to redo it." she mentioned as if it were casual, leaving Hugh's side to go investigate the cabinets. Climbing up with her knees on the counter, She opened one of them and began sifting through it, looking for something she could give her brother.
"So what was Sinnoh like huh?" Up on the top shelf there was Ramen, so since that was easy, she went for that.
"Ah!" when trying to balance herself failed, she toppled off the counter with the package of Ramen, landing back first on floor. Blinking, she registered the slight pain of it but sat up anyway, still planted on the floor.
"Sorry about that!" she mentioned when she looked back at Hugh. "I've got Ramen though, so I hope that's okay!" she mentioned as she held it up cheerfully. It hurt a little, but she was always falling like that, so it wasn't something she wanted Hugh to worry about on his first night home. She had grown a bit clumsier since he had left home, and even her parents had learned not to fret each and every time she fell over.[/style] [style=margin-top: 6px; width: 100px; height:100px; float:right; font-size: 7pt; font-family: calibri; font-weight: bold; text-align: center; border: 5px solid #fefefe]
His smile is small as he allows her to pull him by the wrist into the kitchen. The first thing he notices is the complete difference in the rooms’ appearance. He glances at all the walls in addition to the floor, noting that it’s a different color as well as a different material entirely. The furniture seemed to be the same, but otherwise it seemed to be almost entirely different. I wonder what happened here… he wonders, mouth open slightly to ask his sister. She answers almost perfectly on cue, before he can even get a single word out. Shadow Ball practice? Indoors? Hugh’s mouth is left hanging open slightly, slack from his slight disbelief in his sister’s action. He manages to stare at her silently before she began climbing, and he stands without a word, tensed to try to help her if she has trouble.
His reflexes are clearly a bit out of shape, as he didn’t move quick enough to catch her when she fell, his hands reaching just in front of her chest when she passed his arm’s height. ”Kalula!” he says, voice slightly raised out of alarm that she’d fallen and sat up so quickly, partly out of minor anger that he hadn’t been able to catch her. ”Are you alright?!” He squats next to her, one hand on her back while the other takes the packet of ramen from her before draping over his knee. ”Arceus, Kalula…” he says with a sigh and hanging his head, ”Honestly I’d hoped you managed to avoid becoming as reckless as I am. Next time just ask me to get it okay? I don’t want you falling and getting hurt each time you rush to do something for me…”
He sighs again, pushing himself up and holding a hand out to pick his sister fully up, back on her feet. ”Just be careful, okay? Promise me that and I’ll tell you all about my time in Sinnoh while I eat.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0px,true][atrb=cellpadding,0px,true][style=float: left; width: 250px; font-family: calibri; font-size: 8pt; text-align: justify; padding: 5px]Kalula felt her brother's hand at her back and allowed him to take the package of Ramen from her easily, listening to him as intently as she could. Though she had not been fazed much by the fall, it hadn't hurt for more than a few seconds, but that wasn't why she looked at her brother like she did. No matter how long he had been away from her, she realized how deeply he still cared for her. She tore her eyes away from Hugh long enough to snap back to reality and take his hand, pulling herself up with his help. Though she didn't let go of his hand as soon as she was balanced. "Hugh..." She started, a slight sound of relief in her voice as she mentioned his name. The gaze she had before was back on her brother, almost as intensely focused as it had been before. Kleo and Abosu watched the siblings from the doorway, a warm feeling crossing through Abosu's fur as he felt a rush of distress but at the same time, happiness emanating from Kalula's body.
"It's alright Hugh. I'm getting older now... I can't do everything on my own yet, but little things like this don't hurt as much as they did when I was a little girl." She took a pause to study her brother's face. He looked more mature as well, from the last time she had seen him. Wherever he had been in Sinnoh prior to coming home, it had made him seem a bit more grown up. Her serious mood fading, she decided to finish up what she wanted to say.
"But you know I'll always love and need you no matter what, since you're my big brother and all!" She would always need her brother for support and protection, of course, but she didn't want him to fret and worry over everything she did that was mildly clumsy. Though it seemed weird time to get that off her chest, it seemed the right moment to her.
"But I promise I'll try to be more careful!" Reaching down to the Ramen packet, she took it back from him and walked over to the stove to heat up some water.
"So how about telling me like you promised?" She mentioned, obviously curious about Sinnoh. Though neither of her Pokemon would show it, it seemed that it had captured their interests to hear about the other region as well.[/style] [style=margin-top: 6px; width: 100px; height:100px; float:right; font-size: 7pt; font-family: calibri; font-weight: bold; text-align: center; border: 5px solid #fefefe]
Hugh can do little more than sigh with his sister’s words. He realizes when she speaks that he still views her as the child that he left so many years ago with his parents. He stares into her intense gaze, forcing himself to realize that she’s a teenager now, just as he is nearly an adult. ”Right.” is all he manages to say in return, nodding some. He knows, though, that although she may be older, he will never stop caring for her as intensely as he has in the past, doting on her like the older brother he was even before he left.
That is one thing that has not changed, and probably never will.
His thoughts are only reinforced by what she says next, and the tired trainer feels his weariness evaporating rapidly as he chuckles quietly to himself. ”You don’t need to worry about that, Kalula,” Hugh murmurs, ”…because I’ll always be there for you when you need me.” He glances over her shoulder to the Absol and Liepard sitting a distance off, and suddenly realizes he’s clutching open air just after she took the ramen from him. The spiky-haired teen opens his mouth to complain before he relents, walking over to the table and sitting stiffly in his chair.
He carefully stretches his arms, trying not to cause a spurt of pain from his chest.
”Alright, alright, right to the point as always, huh?” he asks his sister good-naturedly, ”Nothing wrong with that, though. I did promise you after all.” He smiles before beginning his story, ”I guess it would be best to tell you everything. After I returned Kleo to you, I got through Victory Road with Mei and Hugh.” he rolls his eyes a little, fondly, at the memory of the time they spent in that cave. ”But when we got to the end, just before the exit I realized I didn’t feel ready to go through the Elite Four, and I didn’t want anyone else to know. So, I left only after dropping you, mom, and dad a letter saying I was in another region and safe.”
He crosses his arms, ”It was beautiful. Not as much as Unova and some of the sights we get here, but it had that foreign kind of beauty to it. After poking around here and there through the region I decided to start training up in the mountain range that cuts through the middle of the region – the Coronet Mountains. I wanted to get stronger myself, too…not just get my pokemon stronger. So I started at the bottom of the southern mountain and climbed.”
