The sun was starting to set and Kyouhei had a rather...worried look on his face. He had been avoiding coming back to Asperita, and even back to Unvoa at all. He was afraid that Mei was going to hate him for not having been there to help save her from the Knights. If hadn't been for his encounter with White in Sinnoh, he was sure he'd still being hiding out there.
He'd still be stuck being a coward and running away from his problems, letting Hugh be the better man. Kyouhei took his eyes off the view and let his hands grip tightly on the railing of the outlook. It wasn't just his talk with White that had drove him to comeback to Unova, it was also the fact he had made up his mind about something. About two things really, and both of them would be getting done today. He had asked both Hugh and Mei to meet him here at the outlook today, so that he could tell them what he needed to tell them.
He also had something he needed to give to Mei, something he felt she had the right own way more than he himself had. Kyouhei took a deep breath and removed his hands from the railing and turned around, looking out towards the stairs. He had been waiting her for about ten minutes so far, and they hadn't shown up yet. Did they not want to see him? No, that couldn't be the case they seemed rather glad he called and asked to meet. Maybe they were just busy with something.
Still Kyouhei wouldn't have blamed them if they didn't bother to show up, after all he hadn't been around that much since getting back from the Dragon's Den. In fact, it had to seem like he was going out of his way to avoid them to avoid anyone from Unvoa. He hadn't even bothered to contact his brother Black, he just....kinda faded into the background. That wasn't the case though, he just didn't think anyone would like to have him back.
Kyouhei took a deep breath and placed his hands into his jacket pockets, his right hand gripping onto the Pokedex that rested inside of it. He was just going to wait and see, wait and see if the showed up.

When Mei was asked somewhere it was rare she did anything other than accept. Today was no different. Well, particularly because in the time she'd been getting well, the weeks she'd spent getting better and working herself into recovery, she had not seen her other best friend at all. He hadn't even been home to check on her and considering the ordeal she'd been through, she had hoped that for at least a while he might have come back to their starting city to spend some time with her while she was bedridden and unable to go exploring, chase him down and yell at him for leaving her alone again.
Really though, she didn't want to yell at him. Mei was just desperate for cuddles, lately, she had been seeking attention from any and everyone who would give it - usually Kalula, Hugh, Bianca and Cheren felt the brunt of her neediness, as well as her group of Pokemon who had taken to curling up in and around her room in order to keep her company.
Either way, she was not going to deny Kyouhei her presence at the look out, not when he had invited her to join him. You know, so long as he wasn't going to try anything.. uncouth. She didn't want her ribs to hurt any more than they already did, and she wouldn't want to-- she forced her thoughts elsewhere. It was unlikely that Kyouhei would be trying anything like that up at the lookout, even if Hugh wasn't there. He wasn't going to have a repeat of any bad behaviour. Nosiree.
Her lips formed a small smile as she climbed slowly up the steps, followed closely by Morella who had somehow managed to make life that little bit easier using her psychic powers. Not that she'd tell Mei that, or let her trainer know. The Espeon wound around her feet as Mei managed to make it to the peak of the lookout, and her hair whipped in it's pigtails around her face.
Most of her wounds were mended, there was the hint of a scar on her cheek and her hand was still yellow from the bruising, but otherwise she mostly looked like herself. A little worse for wear, yes, and still gaining back the weight she'd lost kept cooped up in a tiny room and denied food, but she definitely had the glimmer of happiness that she had kept up for quite some time.
"Kyokyou..." She greeted him, affectionate childhood nicknames still slipping from her lips the way she knew they would every time they met. Certainly they argued, what friends didn't? But she still had a great deal of care of him, and was well and truly pleased that he had come home, finally. But she was worried, considering the lack of contact, and her usual hug-reach merely extended to a grasp at his wrist carefully. "Hey, I didn't think you were ever gonna come home." She said, her voice light and airy in that very-Mei way, but still doubtful.
For the first time in a while, he'd heard from Kyouhei. That had been interesting. He hadn't been expecting it, nor had he particularly enjoyed the conversation. It hadn't been Kyouhei's fault in the slightest, just a hit too close to home after Kalula had given him an earful a short while ago about leaving without telling people anything. That must have been similar to how Mei and Kalula felt... He glances down at the steps he climbs to the Aspertia Outlook. Probably worse, though... He'd been gone for more than a year, Kyouhei had been away for what, a couple of months? Or has he lost his sense of time?
Whichever... he thinks to himself, picking his gaze up as he turns on the landing, climbing the final fight of stairs. ...this is damn nostalgic. He doesn't know Kyouhei's intentions behind calling he and Mei up on the Xtransceiver just like they had on their journey together, but he can't help but feel somewhat suspicious.
The suspicion isn't that of mistrust, though. Oh no. It's more similar to the feeling that something important isn't right. Something he doesn't know about. I suppose I'll find out.
He half-hops up the final three stairs, covering the height relatively easily with his long legs and stops when he's on the top of the platform, looking across the small area between them to the friend he hasn't seen for a while. "...sorry I'm late." It's a short, awkward apology. Punctuality and politeness were two things that have never come easily to him. "Guess I'm the one holding us up."
He narrows his eyes slightly at Kyouhei, whom he hopes is preoccupied by Mei's forward gesture of affection so the other boy can't see his expression. Reminds me I need to talk to you about that night you had with Mei. However, he holds his tongue now, waiting for Kyouhei to get through whatever it was he has in mind. Then they can get off-topic.

He had expected her to be the first to show up, she always seemed to be the first one of them to get anywhere. He half expected Hugh to actually be with her, but it turned out not to be the cause. Instead with her was her Espeon, who was moving along her legs. The sound of Mei's voice calling him by the nickname she had given him made his smile grow wider.
The smile on his face didn't last long when Mei placed her hand on his wrist and said that she thought he'd never come home, he turned away from her, and back towards the amazing view of the outlook. "Yeah, sorry about that. I just didn't think you'd want to see me." spoke Kyouhei, she seemed happy to see him but how was he to know what she was really thinking?
He heard Hugh's voice next, and he took a deep breath everyone was here and he get this over with. Kyouhei turned around in time to see Hugh's eyes narrowed at him, normally Kyouhei would have said something about it...but he honestly didn't feel like it right now. "Always like you to be last to show up." a fail attempt to add a little humor into a situation that was going to get rather serious here pretty soon.
Kyouhei took another deep breath and looked from Hugh to Mei, "I bet your wondering why I wasn't around, and why I called all of a sudden asking to meet you." Kyouhei began, "I wasn't around because I was afraid you guys didn't want to see me, especially you Mei. I thought you'd be so upset with that I hadn't been there to save you like Hugh had...that my best wasn't good enough." Kyouhei paused and looked Mei in the eyes, "So I ran away. I'm not proud of it, but I did and for that I'm sorry."
"Now for the reason I called you guys here, I've got two things I've got to tell you guys, and I'm not sure how you'll take them." Kyouhei pulled the hand that was holding onto his Pokedex out of his pocket and held it out for Mei to take. "Mei, I'm giving you my Pokedex. I don't have the right to be using this, and I know in my heart your better of with it than me. I've already had Bianca change the information inside of it, so it should be good to go." Kyouhei said nothing else after this, he only looked at Mei his Pokedex in his hands, waiting for her to take it away from him.

What was he, silly? Mei heard Hugh coming up from behind her, and she slowly released Kyouhei's wrist to lean against the railing of the outlook, glancing over the distance as she waited for everyone to get over with the serious stuff so that they could go back to someone's house and watch movies or goof off and.. you know, just mess around the way they had as kids, before Team Plasma, before these Knights and before general life had gotten in the way of everything. Blue eyes blinked a few times at the attempted humour, though she worried that there would be anything but if things worked out in a normal way.
And by normal she meant the two boys fighting and her having to attempt to step in without getting punched. But then, Kyouhei was apologising and feeling like an idiot and she had to cut him off. She reached up to put a hand on his shoulder, giving him a warm smile as she squeezed gently and nodded. "Of course I wanted to see you, I wouldn't have minded if just a wild Rhydon had saved me, I still would have wanted to see you. Both of you. You're my best friends, and I'm just glad I'm home and that you're here. I would have been glad regardless. Don't ever think you're anything less than important to me, kay?"
Mei offered another genuine, adoring smile as she waited for him to continue, blinking as he met her gaze but nodding none the less. "You're forgiven, anyways."
Morella leapt off the ground and onto the railing, then up onto Mei's shoulder as Kyouhei managed to go through part of his speech, and she felt her face heat up in embarrassment. "F-for me?" The brunette was clearly shocked with the revelation. She had always been the girl on the sidelines, rather than as a Pokedex holder. She hadn't minded being the supporter and carer, as that was her role, but with Kyouhei handing her the Pokedex, she instinctively reached out and closed her fingers around it.
"It's yours though, Kyoukyo, I don't know why you'd want me to have it. I kind of let the team down already.. I don't want you to feel like you have to give it to me, if you still want to use it, okay?" She reminded him, but clutched it to her chest anyways, cradling it carefully as she blinked over at Hugh. The pokedex reacted as any good machine that was designed to connect people did. It beeped, remembering that Hugh's own dex was one of it's partners.
Hugh manages to restrain a snort of mild distaste at the fact Kyouhei half-jumped to jokingly attempt to rub in the spiky-haired teen's tardiness. He glances to the side, largely unamused save for the small part of his mind that missed the comments like that. That's only made apparent by the small smirk that grows on his face which is quickly hidden when he sinks his jaw into the trademark funnel-collar of his jacket. He looks back at Kyouhei, expression lightening some when the other boy begins to speak.
He opens his mouth to speak when Mei does, her loving and friendly attitude making the words come from her so much easier than they would have come from him. He half-coughs on the air he'd gathered for speaking before saying something, a bit louder than usual so it can be heard over his collar. Instead of continuing right then and there, he stays silent, noticing Kyouhei's mouth open again to speak. Two things to tell us?
His friend spoke, getting one of the two aforementioned "things" out of the way. Hugh's red eyes widen and he can't help but look between the two of them with an expression of mixed surprise and confusion. "H-Hold on--" he starts, stopping as he hears the Pokedex in his pocket beep. He glances down, sticking one hand into his pocket and pulling the purple and black object out, extending it slightly toward Kyouhei -- no Meis -- Pokedex. It beeps more rapidly before falling silent. "What the heck has spurred this?" His voice is less harsh than it was previously, now steeped with some confusion compared to earlier. He glances at Mei quickly, "Not that I don't think Mei would make a good Pokedex Holder as well, but..."
Hugh trails off, having a feeling that whatever second piece of news Kyouhei has for his two childhood friends will help answer the question as to 'why'. Instead, he gets off the topic and comments on the first, "As to earlier...what Mei said. Just don't run off and get yourself nearly killed because you make a stupid mistake. Otherwise you'll always be the same Kyouhei to us." It would have sounded way to corny for his tastes to say, 'You'll always be the same Kyouhei in our hearts'. That was more like something he'd expect from Mei. Hell, something they would all expect from Mei.
He falls silent, staring at Kyouhei over the top of his funnel-collar and waiting for him to speak. He has the itching feeling that whatever is said next won't be too great.

To tell him that he was always going to be her friend, and she still cared for him. It didn't work as well as Mei might have hoped it was going to work, Kyouhei couldn't shake off the feeling that he could have done something so much more to help her.
Her reaction to him handing her the Pokedex was just about how he had expected it to go. She had asked if it was indeed for her and instead of giving her an answer with his voice Kyouhei only nodded his head at her. Despite saying that she wanted him to be sure about giving her the Pokedex she held onto it tightly, pressing it against her chest. Which only made Kyouhei a lot more sure that she needed the Pokedex a lot more than he himself did.
"I don't want it anymore. Besides like I said, Mei...you've got the right to that thing a lot more than I do." Kyouhei turned away from the group when Hugh asked just what had spurred his giving away of the Pokedex. A sigh escaped the lips of the former Dex Holder, and his gripped tightly on the railing of the outlook again. His eyes closing, as he took a deep breath to answer the question Hugh had asked. "That question actually brings me to the second thing I've come here to tell you guys." he wondered how well they were going to take this news.
"I'm leaving Unova. I don't think I'll actually becoming back either, at least not until I do a little bit of thinking on my part." he turned back around towards them to see how they were going to handle the news. "Like I said I'm not sure how long I'll be gone, and if I'll even comeback. So I wanted to tell you guys that this might be goodbye for awhile." Kyouhei's hands traveled inside of his pants pockets as he looked at Hugh.
"If your gonna fight me over this, now's the time dude. Won't get another chance to tussle with me for awhile." despite how sad the situation might have seemed, Kyouhei couldn't help but smile at his childhood friend. "Then again I don't think you'll miss me kicking your butt huh?" he chuckled lightly and looked towards Mei.
"Oh, and I don't ever think I got the chance to say sorry about getting drunk and trying to take advantage of you. I apologize Mei, and...I'm really sorry for not being there when you got attacked." how he hated goodbyes. When it came down to it, Mei was a fangirl. She had read about the previous Pokedex Holders, she had read about what the rights of passage were when you had a Pokedex and how they worked. She watched Kyouhei and Hugh as the two devices started beeping, and watched the look of confusion on her friend's face. "It's registering that this one has a new owner. It's part of their tracking devices, when they're registered to a person, they'll beep when they're around to let you know. Once a day, so not constantly, but it's a good way to track your companion Pokedexes. As far as I'm aware they're not cross-compatible with previous makes though, so it's you and me who ours will beep for... sorry, I just.. when you guys had them I wanted to learn about them." She looked a little flustered, embarrassed by the fact that she had been so envious as to look further into them and the people who had previously owned them.
She pressed a button on the-- no, her Pokedex, quieting the beeping as she slipped it into a pocket on her bag, where she kept all of her most treasured belongings. Blue gaze shifted from Hugh over to Kyouhei again, however, she quickly turned her gaze down to the ground and sighed, "I don't deserve it. I got captured. How is that worthy of a heroic title?" She ran her fingers through the ends of her hair, good hand twisting in the strands. "But.. okay."
She was about to let it go, shifting to lean on the railing, as he made his second announcement. Mei whipped around, groaning as she jostled her ribs but staring at him in disbelief. "What?!" She squeaked, and, without thinking, walked straight over to her friend, raising her hand and attempting to slap him hard across the face with it. How dare he just up and declare he was leaving and not coming back? "You complain that you weren't here to rescue me, that you could have done more, and instead of staying and helping me get better you tell me you're leaving forever?"
Tears stung in her eyes as she stepped back, realising that she now had rather stabbing pains in her hand and her ribs, both places she had been dealing with quite well until that moment. She reached around her stomach as she shrunk back in on herself, cradling her hand and her torso with the same motion. Mei looked desperately over at Hugh, hoping he would realise that she didn't want either of them to leave again. "Why? Why would you just leave? You apologise for being gone so you should know that it hurts me when you do, you great Primeape!"
Shrinking further into herself, Mei backed up until she had slid in next to Hugh, looking desperately at him for some kind of help. The fact that he'd apologised for assaulting her passed her mind. She didn't even register, too upset by the announcement he'd just made. For once, she wouldn't have minded seeing Hugh collect him with a fist. He deserved it for even threatening to leave. No longer stinging at her eyes, tears slid down her cheeks in frustration and sadness. Why did he hate her?
Hugh stays silent, listening as Kyouhei speaks without much to comment on. The teen slips the pokedex back into his pocket and leaving it to sit while words pass between his two childhood friends. He stands, relatively relaxed until Kyouhei practically drops a bomb on them. He has no reaction at first; shocked silence is all that can sum up how he feels toward the news he’s just received. Mei’s the first of the two of them to express her shock. Or, in Hugh’s case, anger. He feels himself turning close to livid, the relative calm he’d kept minus the slight irritability that had sprung up after coming to the Aspertia Lookout evaporating into nothingness and being replaced by steadily growing rage.
Keep your head, he hears the voice in his head growl to himself, his jaw tensing as his fist curls up in his pocket. He stares at Kyouhei, eyes narrowing after they’d steadily widened with the growing negative emotion within him. ...don’t flip out. He has a feeling those thoughts to keep himself calm will prove to be wasted. He looks down, feeling his body beginning to shake. It’s a tell-tale sign that he’s closer to losing it momentarily on the target of his anger. The two people he’s known the longest would be able to notice. Hugh’s red eyes close and vanish as he tilts his head, his spiked bangs covering them. He hears Mei finish speaking, and senses her come up beside him.
He inhales shakily before finally exhaling loudly, closer to a snarl than anything. ”Well, Kyouhei...” he doesn’t move yet, not an inch. ”...I guess now your true colors are beginning to show, huh?” He looks up finally, still keeping the lower portion of his face sunken behind the raised funnel-collar of his jacket, but at least now he’s making eye contact with the other boy. He takes his hands out of his pockets, leaving his gloved fists by his side while they tremble furiously. ”You’re leaving Unova? After you complain about being unable to save Mei?”
Hugh glances at her when he says her name. ”Because that makes perfect sense.” His red gaze snaps back to Kyouhei. ”Let me guess, you’re bummed you couldn’t save her and rather than trying ran away with your tail between your legs. You probably think you’re leaving Unova for some self-justified reason but guess what, you’re not.” He raises his jaw from behind his collar, the aggressive expression on his face now clearly visible. ”Truth is you’re nothing but an Arceus-damn coward!”
He finally steps forward, covering the distance between them so that he stands inches from Kyouhei, keeping eye contact between them. ”You’re probably no better than you were years ago, huh? Running away again because you’re weak and you know it. I don’t think somebody like you will be able to “kick my butt”. I can hand your ass to you faster than you can dream in any sort of confrontation.” He knows he’s losing the grip on his control – ever since Mei’s kidnapping his poor temper had been even worse than before and Kyouhei was practically asking for a fist in his face - his actions over the course of the past few minutes had been the perfect catalyst.
”Or, if I’m wrong - which I highly doubt - you should go ahead and correct me.” His lip curls and his eyes narrow, ”C'mon. I dare you.”

When her hand met his cheek Kyouhei's head cocked to the left, and clear red imprint of her hand could be seen on it. Kyouhei didn't turn his head back to its normal position, he let his head hang to the left still as he brought a hand to his cheek. Feeling at where Mei had just slapped him, and he didn't say word about it.
"...." He finally turned his head back to its normal position and he looked into Mei's eyes. He tried to bring himself to say that he was sorry, that him leaving was for the best that Hugh could easily take care of her...but he couldn't. He found it hard to say anything to Mei at the moment, he turned his gaze away from her eyes. He couldn't even look her in the eyes at the moment, and then...then Hugh had to speak.
He let the quick to anger boy speak to him so harshly, so roughly. He didn't say a thing to him either, at least not while he was speaking. He let everything his childhood friend was saying to him sink into him.
Coward
Weak
His true colors
Words coming from a friend who was anger about Kyouhei's choice to leave. However the anger that had been laced in his words didn't take the sting out of them, was this what Hugh really thought of him? Did his best friend really think of him as a weak coward? Probably...and Kyouhei didn't blame him it sure as hell looked like he was one. A frown formed on Kyouhei's face as he looked up from the ground he had been staring at and into Hugh's eyes.
"C'mon I dare you."
Kyouhei gulped down a bit of spit that had been forming in his mouth, and felt his body shake and his hands ball into a fist. This could really be the last time he ever got to fight with his best friend, the man who thought he was coward...and weak. However instead of raising his fist against his friend, Kyouhei took a deep breath. "So that's what you really think of me huh? I'm a coward? I'm weak?" Kyouhei pressed his body up against Hugh's as he spoke...getting as close to him as he could.
"You don't know the first thing about fear, about being weak. I'll admit I ran away...so what? You did the same thing if I remember right. You left me alone in Victory Road and went off to train, so who was running away then?" Kyouhei's fist was getting tighter as he spoke to Hugh. "But if you want proof me to prove to you that I can kick your ass then fine." with those words said Kyouhei pulled his fist back, and went to roughly punch Hugh in the lower portion of his chest. Mei had not been pleased wih the reveal of information that Kyouhei had given them. She had expected a warm homecoming, for them to walk down from the lookout together and locate a nice comfortable café where they could celebrate the third of the trio's return but that was not going to happen now. Quite the opposite, really, which in turn just made her more upset. Angrily, clearly hurt even after having slapped him, she wiped away tears and sunk in behind Hugh, listening to him speak and wondering if their reactions might have been too hard.
Except then Kyouhei was being just as harsh, just as rude. "You ran away after the Elite Four too, Kyouhei." She managed to breathe out, "You both left me then, but I forgave you both for that. Hugh left at Victory Road to grow stronger, you trained in Johto for the same reason, but now you're standing here telling us that you feel bad you didn't rescue me, like I would hold it against you, when all I want is to have my two friends here. And then instead of staying, and making amends for being too busy, for hiding, you're leaving. You are a coward, Kyouhei."
She watched his fist with horror, wondering how exactly he could throw a punch so directly at Hugh. Her hands slapped over her mouth and she gapsed in horror, "What in Arceus' name was that for? For calling you out for calling us here to give us terrible news? What happened to you, Kyou? What made you like this?" She grumbled, Morella climbing up and snuggling into her trainer's neck, sensing her distress over the situation.
Normally she would have wanted to intervene somehow, knowing that a punch aimed at Hugh could only mean a fight, but she also knew that she was weak, and the point of boiling and frustration was just beneath the surface for her friends. Each of them were going to let it out, and if she stepped in she may or may not come out worse off than the two of them. She would only intervene should something worse happen, should they be unable to stop.
"Why, Kyouhei?" She mumbled, glancing instead at Hugh, who she was more worried for. He had been on edge since her rescue. This would probably be the last straw for him, and she didn’t want to see either of them hurt - but she was too heartsore to truly stop anything.

He doesn't move away when Kyouhei steps toward him, instead looking down as the other boy approaches to keep eye contact the entire time. He stiffens when Kyouhei's chest presses up against his own and when their noses hover barely inches apart. If sparks truly ignited from tension like they do in the movies, there would be a fire burning between their eyes.
Hugh's lips curl with Kyouhei's words, revealing the clenched teeth within his mouth and giving him an expression one would expect to see on a snarling Mightyena. What his friend says is true, in a sense. He did leave, but not out fear or because he felt weak and helpless like a child needing to be coddled by its parents. Hugh knows Kyouhei had tried to level their field with what they both did (or were doing), but he'd utterly failed.
"I wasn't running." Hugh growls to Kyouhei icily, "I sought greater power."
He speaks as though he's barely heard Mei speaking as well - which he almost hasn't. His anger is only letting him concentrate fully on his target.
The red eyes narrow with Kyouhei's last words and when he notices movement. It's only seconds before the boy lashes out, but Hugh lifts one hand up as something to strike back with but fails to do so, and the other is placed on the buckle of the hip pouch that rests characteristically around his waist.
He coughs when he's punched and steps backwards once, then half-steps back for good measure and crouches, and he lowers his eyes to hide them behind his hair.
"You know..."
His voice is quiet, though laced with anger. He takes time to quickly press the buckle of his pouch and lets it fall to the cement.
"...I've worked for years to try to control my anger, but now you've just pushed it past its boiling point."
Without another word he rushes Kyouhei, left hand drawn back before releasing forward straight for his friend's stomach, right fist following it and aimed for his jaw.
