It didn't feel new to Lucario. It felt foreign. Strange. It made the man she'd stood by throughout the years feel like an entirely new face. She wasn't going to deny what she was seeing - what she was feeling. Perhaps this really was a face she'd never seen but it didn't mean he wasn't the same Riley she knew.
She would also acknowledge the doubt, the doubt that reverberated at her last trail of thought.
There were some things she didn't know, some things she thought she did. They were in Stark Mountain, the place where Riley grew up and what he called was his home. Home had been a confusing term for Lucario and Riley ran on contradictions as he once tried to explain it to her several years ago.
"It's where I was born and raised," he had explained, chatting animatedly before the dance of their warm campfire. "Iron Island is most probably your home since it's where you grew up, training. It's my home, too." He leaned back, pressing his weight on his hands flat on the ground to look up at the stars. "We live by moving from place to place so you might find it hard to understand. It's hard to describe but Stark Mountain will always be my home. It's a sentiment that can never be replaced. Like a friend."
She hadn't been able to understand Riley, not at all. She was most familiar with Iron Island but there were other rough terrains Lucario found enjoyable to train in. How did that make Iron Island a friend to her? Would she risk her life to save Iron Island from destruction as she would for Riley? Lucario highly doubted that.
And she had never known of Stark Mountain, which was rather strange. They'd been everywhere but for some reason, she'd never been anywhere near her trainer's "home." She had stood up with her fists balled in determination, delivering her message with one look in response to Riley's confusion. If she were to find out, she had to go there and see Stark Mountain for herself.
Riley laughed. "Hahahaha, no." He continued to ease the shock he had sensed from her. "You'll hate it there. It's right at the base of a volcano. Hot as eggs on a frying pan. Since you're a Steel-type, you wouldn't like it being there. I know I don't! It sucks. I'm glad I left that place. They won't let you oversleep or take afternoon naps." Riley crossed his arms behind his head, dropping backward to the cushion of leaves and grass. "If it's training, we'll look for somewhere else, outside of Sinnoh, maybe. I've got a few ideas."
Lucario had slowly sat back down, carefully watching her trainer rest as confusion seeped back in her typically stoical face. She didn't understand why he spoke ill of his revered home when she could clearly feel how proud and happy he was. It made his aura distinctively brighter. It made her feel warm, warmer than the flames feasting on the wood could ever make her feel.
But the warmth was no longer there. Riley was right about Stark Mountain. It was no pleasurable experience but Lucario had given it the benefit of doubt until today. She kept the memory of that warmth close to her heart, hoping it would rekindle within her and teach her the meaning of home.
It was fading from her quickly - inevitably - like sands flowing through her fingers. All she could feel was the intense heat from the magma pits and how the air boiled her lungs in each breath she drew. She diligently gave no hints of her discomfort but Raekwon - the younger, less experienced Lucario - was not as mindful in showing weakness.
"We'll rest soon." Riley turned, looking past his shoulder. Lucario mistook his smile for a hollowed gaze because of the red glow from the magma. The shadows were trickier but they might have been right as well... "But it would still be a long way."
Soot rained down on them like snow but it wasn't as least bit relaxing like the one they'd seen in Snowpoint in a non-blizzard day. The sky was dreary and grey and the air was foggy with steam. These natural, unwanted elements clouded around them with a venomous dose of listlessness. It was Riley who seemed to remain unaffected, but it was his smiles that were easiest to read.
He was confused, unsure and lost. His home was lost but he sought to find compensation for the fact he could not turn back time. He could not go back in time and stop the volcano from erupting twice, stop the lava from spilling over his village, his family, his friends - his home; he could not stop Mother Nature from claiming her equivalence.
But he would do that now. He would try, even at the expense of his own life.

Not that he cared very much about such a thing, but the Aggron seemed to appreciate it nonetheless. The mentioned man's lips where pursed tightly into a thin line as he waited. His arms impatiently crossed in front of his chest as he stared toward the Pokemon and his struggling.
His Luxray by his side just watched the surroundings for possible danger, sitting on his haunches and yawning broadly from time to time as there was nothing they should be worrying about, although ears twitched here and there in wariness, before calming slightly when the sound he had heard was indeed nothing. The Luxray spotted every living thing, but most where wild Pokemon and not any danger to them. Although sometimes he nudged his trainer's body for a single pat on his head to avoid going after some of the more defenseless Pokemon he could make a snack out of.
It was not a good moment to test Nazo's patience however and he was ready to withdraw the Aggron before the Pokemon managed to move the piece of rock and shove it away and free the path that he needed to take. The pokeball was in his hand already though and with a curt movement he withdrew the Pokemon and continued his way, snapping his fingers impatiently to make the still free Pokemon follow. The Luxray did so without hesitation, although it did stretch first. He hoped to find an opening of some kind that would bring him deeper into the mountain.
Of course he had heard tales about the Legendary Pokemon that was supposed to reside here and of course his curiosity had been raised as well and he had went to investigate the spot. After telling some people where he had gone, of course. He didn't want anyone following him quite yet, assured that he could do this alone. It wasn't like he doubted it even now, in the face of the heat and the heaps of rocks around them. It was far from comfortable, that he knew for sure. His hand wiped at some of the sweat gathering at his brow.
Nazo stopped not too soon after, having walked what seemed like ages and looked down at the Luxray "Did you spot something?" He questioned, the feline Pokemon looked at him, before growling lowly and walking into a seemingly random direction. The man didn't move for a while, before shrugging and deciding that it couldn't matter and followed the Pokemon. His feet soon made that he passed the Pokemon though, not content with following behind a Pokemon. He was only content with following one person only and that was only because they had been friends from a young age.
Maybe not even that, but the fact remained that they had known each other nearly their entire lives. Had withstood many things and now he was here, the co-leader of a rising organization and with goals he hadn't dared imagine before in his mind and ready to be carried out or at least soon. It was like the moment that someone held their breath to await something to happen. His fingers moved to ball into fists and then his hand brushed purple hair away and out of his face. His lips pulled into a faint smile that seemed more mocking and aimed toward himself.
A faint sound of voices echoing and his eyebrows knitted together in a frown and he aimed another look at the Luxray who had stopped quite a distance away and stared in the direction of the voices, ears perked up and seemingly staring at the wall. He raised an eyebrow and then huffed underneath his breath "Apparently you found something." He murmured, the Luxray only started moving again, the both of them wondering why someone else would want to be here, although they also could care less. It wasn't often that someone visited here, at least that was what he thought.[/style] |
