Kalula had never been known to have a temper. It wasn't Kalula-like at all. But today, she was upset, and out of all the people, at one of the most unlikely of them. Hugh was someone she relied on in good times and bad, but today, she was fuming. Kleo, who was following behind her, sat on her haunches, her emerald eyes boring into the siblings as the creamy-chested Pokemon watched them from a distance.
"What may I ask, did you think you were doing when you decided that it was okay to go off and Rescue MeiMei without me?!" She had been worried about her friend for a really long time, since she had gotten some weird messages from the girl on her phone, and together they had all determined that it was indeed not Mei using her phone. She had wanted to help her brother rescue her so badly.
In fact, she had mentally prepared herself for weeks, ready to tackle a mission that was several times out of her leauge. But if it had meant saving Mei, she would have done it with no hesitation. She was nearly shaking from the unusual anger that she felt when she looked at her brother. Normally if he would have come through the door, she would have greeted him cheerfully, and just bask in the warmth and company she felt while around him. But today, it was a thick burning sensation, one that was not of love.
She knew that Hugh had quite the temper, she knew that better than anyone. but if he got upset with her for speaking her mind, she felt ready to combat it for as long as she could. She hadn't like that he had gone out to save her one night, leaving her out of the loop. Not only had she worried for the saftey of her brother, but she had been left in the dust.
"What did you just think I was gonna brush it off? I'm glad you saved her, I'm so glad she's back, but I also feel terrible, I was useless that whole time!" She felt betrayed, by someone who was indeed her world. Her voice broke slightly as she continued, her words strained and her eyes covered in a soft film of unreleased water. "What did you think, Hugh? Great Zekrom what did you think?..." She swallowed a soft lump in her throat.
"That I wasn't going to worry when I woke up and found you gone?" She recalled the time when he had left, without telling her, or her mother or father, and swallowed a harder lump of air.
"But you're good at leaving without telling people, aren't you?" She didn't want to give him a chance to see her cry. Realizing her last sentence and the significance behind it, she gasped, not believing it had come out of her...almost not believing. She bolted up the stairs and her door slammed shut, probably so the girl could go ahead and throw herself on her bed, most likely forgetting to lock her own door. Kleo's eyes almost softened as she glanced over at Hugh, probably trying to figure out what his plan of action would be. He looked tired as all hell, that was for sure.
Hugh is nearly blown over with the explosive force of his sister's voice and her raging attitude as soon as he steps through the threshhold of the door to their house. She hadn't even waited for him to finish locking it before her voice reached dangerous levels he often associated with his mother if he had ever done something "horrible" as he'd believed it to be when he was younger. Luckily, those times were rare. The sudden change in volume always makes the Dex Holder to leap out of his skin.
He's already locked the door behind him, too. There's no escape from his baby sister's wrath. Diagla, Palkia, and Giratina what did I do?! In his sleep-deprived state he can't muster the energy to allow his poor temper to flare up right back at her, not that he'd even allow himself to - the many mental blocks preventing the harsh side of his tongue from lashing against her he's built up over the years courtesy of his well-known rage are still intact despite the wear and tear they've faced lately.
He allows her powerful words to beat against him, meshing in with the other events that have taken place within the past fifty-odd hours he's been awake. It numbs him to anything else, and while he remains fully alert to all she says, he finds his gaze won't even rise to meet hers. Partly from exhaustion, partly from guilt he feels because of the truth he hears in her words, and partly because he's too ashamed to admit that his actions had been half out of fear that she'd be taken as well were he to fail in saving Mei. "It's just..." He only would have endangered his beloved sister and failed more than he already has.
"Kalula, I--" Her words cut him off
He swallows when she does, half-wondering what he had been thinking. His rescue of Mei was flawless - almost as though it had been too easy. What if something had gone wrong with just him and he wound up getting captured, or worse, Mei killed? He's snapped out of his thoughts immediately with the last words she demands of him.
"...you're good at leaving without telling people..."
It echoes in his mind and his red eyes go wide as he stares at her, jaw dropped in stunned silence as she turns and runs. His body is rigid as the venom from her stinging words numbs him entirely. He feels as though she's punched him in the stomach, and finds himself still-staring at the spot she's just run from.
"...sh--." He tries to muster words, but fails even himself. His knees buckle slightly and he lands on the floor with an audible thump, hands hung weakly in his lap.
He stares with almost empty eyes at the wooden floor, only livening up slightly when the Liepard comes into his view. She crouches so he doesn't have to raise his head, green eyes staring intently into his as though prompting him to speak. "Sh...she's right." The pokemon cocks her head to the side, ear twitching. "I am...good at leaving other people." His lips curl with disgust as he realizes this can be added to the ever-growing list of his negative qualities.
"...my own sister..."
He's silent for a moment, before feeling lancing pain shooting through his wrist. "Ow!" The Liepard had bit him (gently, but it still hurt like hell!) and now stared at him with a flat expression, as though calling him a moron in her own way. "What?!" She points upstairs with her nose, tail twitching in a nearly irritable manner. "...Right." He sighs and pushes himself up, hauling his body up the stairs and almost unconsciously beelining straight for his room. He sheds his jacket, gloves, hip pouch, and shoes, grimacing as the leather of his glove pulls over the swollen knuckle he's sure he's sprained or fractured from his earlier punch of an unmoving door.
The teenager taps his socked toes once against the wooden floor before running his hands across his arms in an attempt to get himself to focus before he exits his room and moves down the hall to Kalula's, standing outside her door for a short time before finally knocking.
"K...Kalula..." he glances to the side, knowing it's too late now. "...don't be --" Hugh cuts himself off, sighing as he reminds himself to choose his words more carefully, "...we should uh...talk about this."

So much in fact, that she wouldn't have ever mentioned any of it if she hadn't been so angry. She buried her face in one of her many fluffy pillows and took deep breaths, trying so hard not to sob it out. Nidoulan, the normally anti-social Nidoran, poked her head out from under the bed, quick to try and see what the commotion was about. She almost felt sorry for the lump slouched on the bed, a heap of girl mixed with many bottled up feelings. Poor girl. Girl needed to be comforted, but as she heard the knock on the door, Nidoulan quickly made her retreat and slipped back under the bed, not wishing to be caught out by anyone.
The last thing she would have ever wanted to do was have a super-serious fight with Hugh, but this would count as once of those times. And she didn't want to answer the knocking. She didn't want to see her brother's face after her last comment. She didn't want to have to see what she could already hear in her dear big brother's voice. But she had started this, right? He was just answering the challenge she issued, although it didn't sound like a challenge, and rather an offer. An offer to work things out. A but of the tears she had been holding in splashed onto her face as she moved to get up.
"..." walking straight over to the door, almost mechanically, Kalula rested her hand on the door, almost as if deciding if it was right to open it. It was automatic most times. She loved when Hugh came to visit her room normally, but today of course, of course it was different. But it had to be done. She jiggled the handle and the door slid open only slightly, so Hugh could push his way in as Kalu prepared to do something rather childish. She made a mad- dash for her bed and flew right into the pile of assorted Pokedolls, situating herself behind a rather large Coballion doll. Nervously, she peered out from behind it, not daring to meet her brother's eyes.
"Talk about what?...." she asked, her words falling flat as she did so. She felt scared. What if she was going to ruin their bond because she squeaked out some hidden feelings. the rush of loneliness she felt from waking up a day or so ago, and waking up years ago, to find Hugh gone, came rushing over her in a wave. "Look. What i said isn't important. I'll get over it. Live and let live, right?" She looked away then, burying her face within the side of the doll she was using as her protection.
Hugh finds himself in silence after his knocking and words ended, listening desperately for some sign of his sister behind her shut door. He curses to himself, desperately hoping Kalula will allow the both of them to work out this issue. Despite the fact he's fully sleep-deprived, he knows that if they were to go unspeaking for the night, he would only be able to rest after passing out from utter exhaustion. Come on, Kalula... he pleads through the barrier between them, Open the door... of course, he has no real power to command her to do such a thing. Only their parents, who are conveniently out of town at the moment, are able to make the siblings face each other after one of their rare fights. He closes his eyes, bowing hisbhead some as he raises his fist to try knocking again.
The subtle click of the door doesn't register until his knuckles miss the wood from it having swung open ever so slightly- just out of his range. Hugh's eyes opened when he hears the rushed shuffle of feet against the floor followed by the creak of bedsprings. She musy have answered and ran. He places his injured hand in his pocket before pushing the door open hesitantly and looking in without moving.
Her words make him half-cringe, dropping his gaze only after locating his sister among her pokedolls. "Between the two of us I don't think you're the one that needs to get over anything." His tiredness combined with the sting from her words just moments ago make him direct and give his voice a sharper edge. The teen keeps his eyes mostly on the ground as he finally enters, replacing his free hand in its appropriate pocket finally.
He edges towards her bed a bit warily before sitting stiffly on the edge of it, eyeing the wooden floorboards before facing her slightly, though still keeping his gaze dropped. He silently curses the fact that his t-shirt has no funnel-collar to effectively hide behind, and that it's bright as day courtesy to it still being the morning so he can't hide his expression in the shadows.
"You know..." the Pokedex Holder begins, finally forcing himself to look up at his sister, "...I'd hoped for years that you managed to escape the issues I've had with my anger for yourself, but I guess even you need to cut every now and again..." Hugh forces himself to smirk at his sister, "That outburst surprised me."
His gaze falls again and he blinks once before speaking again. "...but I guess you had full right to...say what you did." Hugh tenses, the admitted hurt from her words making him shudder. "I probably owe you what little explanation I can offer."
