"Thank you for coming out with me today, Huey," Mei chimed as she flashed her friend a dazzling smile. It had been quiet around. There had been no bad storms, though the ground was wet from an overnight rainfall. Twigs and branches scattered the path though the path of destruction was nothing compared to the devastation that had taken over her hometown in a time not so long ago. Mei kicked her foot idly in a puddle as she walked, glancing back slightly at the figure of her friend. She had been skipping ahead because she could, enjoying the cool air on her face as damp as it was. She didn't mind at all, however, because Hugh was there with her, a watchful eye. At times she believed that he was too worried about her, concerned that she would perhaps fall once more into enemy hands.
Mei was determined not to be so much of a bother, but it was nice to know that regardless of what happened, the Qwilfish-haired boy she had called her life-long bestfriend was there to protect her. He keeps promising to take care of me, he can be so sweet! She mentally cooed, a small grin pricking up on the corners of her lips. Eyes shone and she had to stop herself from stopping to glance properly back at the boy in the red jacket. Though she supposed she couldn't really call him a boy anyore, either. He was not the little rage-filled young teen she had fought Team Plasma beside any longer, oh no, he had trained and fought much past that.
A soft coo made the brunette look up from her thoughts, and her mindless wandering came to a halt (making quite the splash, as she stopped in a puddle) as she tried to locate the sound. It was pitiful, like something had upset it somehow. She looked around for the source of the noise and, in a beam of sunlight peeping through the leaves of the trees was a tiny Pidove, looking hopelessly up at the tree. From her calculations, Mei guessed it had only hatched recently which meant that it was probably desperate to make it's way back to the nest of it's mother.
An Unfezant nest was sure to be high too, Mei pondered as she skipped towards the tree. The branches were still damp from the overnight downpour and she mentally made note that it was possibly some wind that had knocked the little bird out for some time. At least it seemed mostly okay, though perhaps not at full health.
Mei danced towards the tree with an absolute determination on her face. So long as it's mama wasn't home, she could easily return the little Pokemon to it's nest. As she approached, she glanced back at Hugh, "Our walk will continue in a minute, I have to rescue this little Pidove before something nasty comes along. I don't want something to snap it up when it's still so young." She scooped the little Pokemon into her hands and rested it on her shoulder, flinching as it pinched some of her hair between it's beak.
She should have thought of that, she figured as she glanced at the base of the tree and reached an arm up to the lowest branch to start pulling herself up. She would rescue this cute little Pokemon if it was the last thing she did! And then Hugh would see that she was a good mothering type too! Mei flushed as she thought about the idea, then shook her head. She was doing this for the Pokemon's sake, not her own heart's fantasies. If she was too focused on Hugh then she might slip on a damp piece of bark.
"It's been a long time since we climbed trees together, Huey. But I don't think this one can take both of us, the branches aren't as strong as some of the ones around Aspertia. Maybe when I get this little Pidove back to it's mama's house we can find a tree to climb together? That'd be fun!" She grinned, now determined to do just that as she swung her leg up onto another branch easily. Mei might not be the best when it came to flying, but climbing felt like second nature. Even if it had been a few years.

SLUTTERZ as MEI
Hugh felt his face flush slightly when Mei smiled at him. The teen quickly looked to the side, jaw sinking behind the funnel-collar of his jacket as it always did when he found some reason to "hide" from somebody. "Yeah..." he muttered quietly, appearing incredibly interested in their scenery after the night's rain. "...of course. It's a nice day."
Whose idea had it been, even, for the two of them to go on a walk? Hers? His? For whatever reason he couldn't remember. ...must have been mine, then... the teen reasoned. He had always found it far easier to remember whatever Mei and Kyouhei told him than things he himself decided.
Crimson eyes rose slightly from their downward angle in time to see Mei staring at him for a moment before her attention was taken by a small sound. The eyes Hugh could find himself lost in forever and a day had only glimpsed his. While he was grateful for their broken eye contact so soon - as he wouldn't be left staring back wordlessly and entranced - he found himself wanting to see her eyes again.
Following her quietly, and getting over his petit longing to see blue of Mei's eyes again, his own eyes soon fell upon the source of the tiny sound that had captured his friend's attention so quickly. A Pidove on the ground. Head tilted backward slightly to look up within the tree's branches. Unfezant were notorious for making nests seemingly impossibly high up.
"This little guy had one heck of a fall..." Hugh mused quietly, only to be cut off by Mei's words.
"Uh -- what?" Slight nervousness instantly crashed upon the Qwilfish-haired boy. There was no trace of doubt in his mind for his sweet, carefree - albeit slightly gullible and clumsy - and loving friend's intentions to return the Pidove to its nest, however...
"Mei I uh..." His hand flashed to his belt, pulling a pokeball from where it was latched. "...Havilah could easily carry it to the nest --" He failed to mention that his Flygon would probably scare the poor pokemon out of its wits at first, but, his upcoming point stood.
"Please be careful..." he said, returning the pokeball to his belt, but keeping both hands by his sides as he watched her begin to climb. "Just...take your time and watch where you climb, okay?" The volume of his voice had risen to accomodate the growing height she was above him.
They - Kyouhei included - had always climbed Aspertia's strong, thick-limbed trees as children, but that had been years ago before they had set out on their journeys and taken down Plasma. He couldn't help but feel Mei wasn't taking that fully into account.
"Be safe and we can climb a bigger tree afterward," he promised, using his words to cover the nerves he felt wiring his muscles.

"I hope he's not hurt badly.. I'll give it a spray with a Potion when I get it back to it's nest, just in case." Mei responded, waving off his half-protests as she glanced over her shoulder at her friend. "I'm already climbing now, there's no point in wasting poor Havilah's energy. It's not like I'm all broken any more, look, I can wiggle and everything!" She grinned as she paused her ascent, turning on the branch to move her body in an unusual tree-dance. Perhaps not the safest act in a tree, but her footing held and she let a quiet cackle become the soundtrack as she pulled herself up another branch.
The pidove on her shoulder cooed again and she realised exactly how loud their little noises could be when so very close to the ear. "You worry too much, Hugh, I'm an old hand at climbing. Psh, nothing can stop me!" She gave a bounce on a slightly creaky branch, and hauled herself up.
Hissing quietly as she felt a splinter in her finger, she knew she was far from ready to give up and shook her hand out. "Trees can be so prickly sometimes." She mused and looked back down over the top of the next branch to her friend. Though she wouldn't say it, with him looking up at her she could see the shape of his hair and it did look rather like a Qwilfish. But much softer, she thought. Nice to sink your fingers into. Like a very plush toy. "Your hair is so fluffy from this angle, Huey. I just want to snuggle it!" Mei giggled lightly as she hauled her leg up and over the branch she'd been peering over.
The bird chirped and she wrinkled her nose. "If you want me to take you back to your mama, you can't keep tweeting that loudly, little Pidove." She half-scolded, reaching around for a branch to help her stand. As she got to her feet she felt a slight moistness on the branch but managed to catch herself before she slipped, hands looped around a secure branch above her. "Bigger is better! We'll have to find one where we can sit together on a branch, okay?" Mei called back, eager to have such an experience.
It had been such a long time since they'd been able to just have fun.

SLUTTERZ as MEI
He exhaled silently as Mei continued to speak. It was relief mingled with the nerves that hadn't quite soothed over. If she were still capable of talking rather than concentrating entirely on climbing, then she must be okay...right? "Ack --!" he stifled a worried sound when she did whatever kind of little jig on a thick branch to prove her point. "Don't -- just -- ..."
A sigh of exasperation left his lips and the fabric of his cloves met his face in an ungraceful manner, partially quieting himself as to not seem like a mother Blaziken worrying over something important.
Fingers parted to allow sight from his crimson eyes once more as he looked up slightly at the mention of his hair. A hot flush pitched in his cheeks, and he was grateful his face was partially behind his collar, and partially covered by his hand already. "I...er..."
His response came as slightly murmured, embarrassed by her appreciation for his irritating hair. "...th-thanks, I guess?" A hand rose and self-consciously ran through the spiky locks atop his head that was a constant bane of his up until only a few years ago when he finally grew into the ... bush on his head.
Eyes widened and hands dropped when she seemed to waver for a moment. "Be careful, Mei!" he called up to her, now feeling the worry in him again. Bark would undoubtedly be slick from the rain - and he hadn't thought of that.
As a pre-emptive measure, he pulled Havilah's pokeball from his belt once more, expanding it in his hand lest he need the Dragon-type.

"I bet they would make you be like.. a model for the softness of a teddiursa bear. Because your hair is so cuddly. I should suggest it to a toy maker. You might make a fortune being the test subject!" Mei giggled amusedly, seemingly ignore the frustration she was causing her childhood companion. She was confident in her climbing skills and she would compensate for any slippage because she was Mei Morimoto, greatest of all climbers!
She paused her ascent briefly to look out from where she'd reached and let another wild grin take over her face. She could see so much from up this high, out to where it looked as if there had been much less rain. She forgot how much she liked to see. Even if she didn't like flying, she liked heights. A bizarre one the brunette was indeed.
Rolling her eyes at his concern, as if his fretting was just silliness and not actual danger of falling, she waved a hand at him to show him she was 'being careful'. "I'm fine, see! Do you need me to dance up here again to prove it?" She chuckled as she spied the mess of twigs and mud a few more branches up. They were starting to lose their thickness the more she climbed and she was making her way closer to the top with every level. "I can see the nest, I'll be down in a minute!"
The sight of the ball in his hand made her smile. He really did worry about her but she was clearly unstoppable. Her recovery had put thoughts of invincibility into her mind and she liked the feeling of confidence once more. Feeling the bird Pokemon claw excitedly the closer they got to the nest, she pulled herself up to the closest branch she could. Any closer, she thought, and they would be dangerous. They might not hold her weight.
She tested the spot as she stood, picking the little Pidove off her shoulder and stretching towards the nest. It was a little out of reach, considering her height. She just needed to be a few inches taller! Standing on her toes and using one hand for balance, she teetered rather precariously on her perch as the Pokemon hopped to the edge of her hand. "So.. close!" She grumbled, stretching her whole body in the process and hoping the little bird would figure out to jump the last of the way.

SLUTTERZ as MEI
Hugh's face flushed a darker shade of red - starting to enter the territory of matching his jacket now - as Mei continued to speak, though his eyes trained on his lifelong friend didn't allow him to look away, in spite of himself. Instead, the spiky-haired teen simply sank the rest of his face further behind his raised collar to 'hide' from her.
He could think of no response to her enthusiasm other than to sit there (stand, more literally) like a moron and watch her wordlessly. Gloved fingers clenched a bit tighter around the enlarged pokeball. He could barely make out how steady his friend was (or not) from how far away she was.
Clicking his tongue with irritation, he looked down at the pokemon within the ball. The Dragon-type regarded him for a moment before briefly nodding. That input was all he needed, and Hugh released the Flygon from her pokeball without a second thought, hopping on her back as he normally did to travel from place to place within a region.
"Up." he murmured quietly, "Not top speed though...until you need to move faster. Arceus forbid --"
He did not want Mei to fall in the slightest, but he had to increase his elevation to catch her without killing her.
Obliging, the Flygon's wings flapped instantly, blurring with their quick vibrations and creating the telltale humm that earned the lore surrounding them. Quickly, Havilah and Hugh began to ascend in case something went wrong.

Managing to finally transport the little bird Pokemon was a relief for the brunette girl and her focus was now reaching the potion up to recover some of it's health. Pulling it from inside of her little satchel, she sprayed it on the saved little bird and sighed in relief. She was a hero, just like Hugh. He had saved her and now she had rescued a poor little Pokemon. Their job here was done.
With relief, Mei made to move herself down to the next branch but found her footing off. The bark was wet enough that her sneakers - worn down with less grip than they should have had - slid and she squeaked in alarm. But she had no time to react, not really. Her footing given way underneath her, she shot one hand up and clung to the branch with it, other feeling too heavy to pull herself up with a grip.
Another loud yelp, this time more than a squeak, spilled from her throat and the familiar sound of vibrating wings alerted Mei that Hugh was apparently faster thinking than she was, and she attempted to keep her fingers in place. But if he didn't see her where she was, well, she might still fall and then what would happen?
Despite knowing that he was probably sick of rescuing her, Mei took in a deep breath and looked up at her hand. She was losing her grip as it became harder to hold herself. She reached with a foot for a branch but found only one that might give way beneath her. "H-Hugh!" She called out. No time to avoid the awkwardness of he rescuing her again. No, she should have just been more careful from the start, but now at least she could let him know she needed help.

SLUTTERZ as MEI
Shit!
The thought only made itself audible through a hiss of air between Hugh’s teeth, and he leaned forward, urging Havilah to fly faster. The Dragon beneath him didn’t need its trainer’s urging to do so; being well aware of the situation and watching it unfold with her own two eyes. She shot forward, her rate of acceleration forcing Hugh’s hair back as though he were on the roller coaster in Elesa’s first Gym. Admittedly he had never experienced it first-hand, having challenged the Electric-type specialist when she moved to a catwalk.
Regardless, the point still stood.
”Mei!” his yell was somewhat strangled, half out of his own worry and half out of exasperation at his friend for being as childishly clumsy as she was. Within seconds, the Dragon was beneath the female trainer, and Hugh had scooted back, now sitting behind the wing-joint and freeing up the spot between the Flygon’s wings for his friend. Havilah rose slowly, careful to position her shoulders between Mei’s shoes were the girl to suddenly drop.
”I’ve got you, Mei…” Hugh murmured, gently placing one hand on the girl’s waist and positioning the other behind her knees. ”Just don’t move.” He knew she could only last a few seconds more as she dangled. In a swift motion he knocked her legs forward, upsetting her weight just enough to hopefully pull her hand from the branch. He and the pokemon below, however, had positioned just so that Mei would fall…quite literally into his arms, the hand around her waist acting as a support so he could hook his free arm beneath her knees.
She’d either land with an arm around his shoulders to help balance herself and cling to him as support, or wind up curled against his chest in the means of security.

Mei was slipping. She couldn't trust the fact that there were branches beneath to stop her horrid fall and she hadn't thought that she would be in such a state of difficulty when she was getting down. Unfortunately for her she was trapped where she was, stuck on the edge of a branch with her toes not-quite-able to reach. Gaze blinked upwards at the branch she clung to, fingers tightening and whitening around her knuckles as she let out a rush of air from her lungs. It wasn't likely to help, considering that air weighed nothing, but it felt like maybe any tiny bit of weight could stop her from losing her grip.
The thrumming sound of Havilah's wings woke her from her terrified state as she heard the buzz and then the rush of air that followed. It was followed shortly by Hugh's worried tones and the brunette was struck instantly with a sense of guilt. He was not going to be happy with her for not watching where she was going. Stupid slippery bark, making it much more difficult to get her friend to climb trees with her. Silly Unfezant who had to nest so high in the trees that the poor little baby bird stood no chance of getting back up there should no one have helped.
Air caught in her lungs as she held on, "I'm okay, really!" She tried to argue as she felt the air moving around her feet from the dragon's hovering. "You know, mostly." But apparently she was not quite so okay as the shock of a hand on her waist set her fingers slipping. Her breath hitched and she flushed a bright shade of pink - even in a dire situation, nothing could set her off quite like the possibility of being held. With a short, sharp, "Eep!" She could feel er fingers give way at the same time she was knocked off the branch by her concerned friend.
What was really no time at all felt like long moments spent weightlessly in the air as she fell with rather and ungraceful flail into the poor teenager's arms. To steady herself and make certain she didn't fall any further (or knock the two of them from poor Havilah's back) her arms flung up around Hugh's neck. Well and truly stuck in place, she shifted herself for what she assumed was balance and comfort. The nerves that normally would have struck her from being on the back of flying Pokemon were completely erradicated when Mei noticed exactly where she had landed and a whole different set of nerves sprang to life in the put of her stomach.
Once more she had found herself saved by her lifelong friend (probably exhausted from all the saving too, really) and there he was. Right in front of her face. Close proximity was an understatement when she wiggled and could feel the fabric of that ever-present high-collared jacket move with her. Oh yes. And his face was right there. So close she could feel the movement of air from his breath. Oh Arceus, she thought briefly, blue gaze blinking like a stunned buneary while the whole situation processed in her head.
Briefly she thought to move or perhaps to try and wiggle forward to separate them, to give him some space but her entire body had frozen, arms locked around his neck for safety and comfort. And she was locked under crimson eyes that had been worried enough to come and resuce her once more. Oh yes, she was well and truly trapped.

SLUTTERZ as MEI
A short breath left his nose when his friend finally did fall into his arms. Although he'd prepared himself for catching her, part of him was still caught off-guard when Mei literally fell into his arms. He leaned back slightly to keep his weight centered on the Flygon's back with the additional person, and crimson eyes turned downward to look at her.
They were both silent, the gentle hum of Havilah's wings the only background noise for the two of them as the Dragon-type glanced back, a small smile-like expression on her face before lowering slightly and flying through the air, about twenty feet from the ground to give the pair on her back some privacy from anybody that may have been below.
The arm not around Mei's back shifted slightly to lower her body gently toward Havilah's back, giving the pigtail-wearing girl a seat just in front of him while he still held her close with an arm around her torso.
Now he let a mildly exasperated sigh escape through his nostrils before speaking. "One of these days your good heart is going to give you more than just a splinter." She'd be able to hear the smirk in his tone although it was hidden by the collar. Although he was kind about it, it was his way of telling her to be more careful; worrying wasn't something he wanted to do constantly.
Hugh couldn't bring himself to tell her, though, that as many good intentions as she had, sometimes she wouldn't be able to fulfill all of them because it would cost her more than she anticipated.
Crimson eyes blinked once as he looked down at her. "You alright, Mei?" He hadn't even asked after getting her down.
Post by MEI MORIMOTO on Aug 22, 2014 23:13:58 GMT 9.5
Even if her heart was racing and even if she could have fallen to her death had her lifelong friend not been there, Mei was settled when she got her bearings. She was securely pressed against Hugh in their position and she could hear his breath through the thrum of the Flygon's beating wings. He was so careful with her - it was somewhat disarming, really. The spiky haired boy could be a bundle of rage and strength when he was in the right mood and yet when it came to her he'd never raised a finger.
It reminded her of the way he was with Dzevezda when the little baby eevee was around during some of their conversations. More delicate than she saw him at other times. Perhaps to Hugh, she was like an Eevee. Still needing to be tended to, taken care of. Sheepishly smiling back at him, she adjusted herself on the Dragon-Bug's back and shrugged her shoulders once.
"Some things are worth risking splinters and more for. But I'll try to be nice in ways that don't involve climbing trees next time." Her own way of thanking him for watching out for her - for being there to catch her when she fell and apologising for all the times her bleeding heart would get her into some kind of trouble in the future.
All the talk was not making any more space appear between them, however, and the brunette was surprisingly okay with that. Sure, her cheeks were slightly flushed and her lips were turned up that little bit more. Certainly her eyes lingered that little longer on his own when he looked down, but she liked the closeness. Her arms found a more comfortable angle around his neck, fingers idly toying with spiky blue strands.
Her hero.
His question caught her off guard, however, and Mei tilted her head upward just so to reply, "I'm-" but the motion of her words was enough to notice that she could feel the rush of air from his breath on her skin. Instinctively she stretched, leaning up and in until her lips brushed his.
