MARC "WALLACE" LeBEAU
THIRTY-THREE / MALE / HETEROSEXUAL / ELITE (CHAMPION) / LAWFUL NEUTRAL
PERSONALITYaffable - despite the fact that, up until recently, he has lived secluded in ever grande, wallace has a certain countenance that distinguishes him as approachable. charming in captivating the attention of contest audiences, contest judges, trainers and coordinators alike, it's a simple task in chatting him up - if one does manage to capture his attention, especially if the matter is particularly interesting. he does not actively seek opposition, treating most others with a good-natured view. he's also seen to be quite a romantic, as his usually well-meaning actions could just as easily be misconstrued as being far too generous. it's just his personality; to an extent, he will extend the proper warmth and cordiality to those he deems fit. if anything, it's almost second nature.
dependable - the role of a former gym leader and a champion are not tasks easily shouldered by just anyone. it takes a certain amount of responsibility, patience, and perseverance. one also has to be able to function well both in a group and in an independent manner. he's that type of person to volunteer for the most migraine-inducing tasks, seeking to keep the complaints to a minimum until the duty has been completely fulfilled. he bears them with his head held high, exuding a confident mannerism nurtured - and perhaps bloated - by his usual victories in contests. whether it should be for menial questions or extended reconnaissance missions, he's the go-to guy.
intuitive - investigations and information gathering have become a larger part of his repertoire since the incident with groudon and kyogre. exposure to such tasks have developed the key skill of being meticulous, to never let a single detail go by unscathed. of course, it's a whole other task entirely to put two and two together, and that does take a certain level of an intelligent mind. he's no genius, of course, but his stubbornness may cover up for that fault. however, in this course, he may begin to stray far when pursuing leads, owing to his sometimes single-minded pursuit of knowledge. he may also hold rather stubborn and distinct opinions of people and steadfastly at that, unless a major event should occur and otherwise prove him wrong.
laidback - when absent from hostile situations, wallace definitely does not possess the fiery passion of the late flannery. going through day-to-day routines - contests and champion tasks alike - he tackles them all with a resilient and yet relaxed view. battles aside, he rarely gets worked up over the more minor matters, using biased judgement in order to perceive them as worth the effort, or not. however, this trait also extends to a certain extremity in that it does make him reserved, enigmatic and thus secretive in matters he believes need not be said.
flamboyant - needless to say, he's an artist at heart. his dramatic way of dressing elegant mannerisms have grown more and more with age, further heightened with continued exposure to contests. if anything, it's almost a requirement with his lifestyle. one of hoenn's top coordinators has everyone's eyes on him the moment he steps on stage with his pokemon, while being the champion demands a certain attention on him. even when he's not in a competitive setting, his odd quirks do peek through, particularly in his erratic references to beauty and poetically vivid descriptions of what he believes is truly eye-catching. this of course, may happen to come off as vain to others who don't know him, and arrogant in his judgement. he can also he a tad emotional. he's bound to get himself into some drama, after all.
sentimental - perhaps one may argue that he's not quite of the age to start reminiscing, to be one to hold on to past matters so firmly. but wallace would argue otherwise, further complimented by that amorous nature that has him refusing to simply let go. thus he can be passionate towards matters that greatly concern him, or have in the past. he believes there's a value to time, that it is much too short to squander on menial trivialities. his attachments usually conclude in rather reflective moments, particularly those of hs old memories. because he is able to link himself to what he truly believes are his successes and shortcomings, he can then be sympathetic of other's problems and concerns. he understands everyone has their bad days. this betrays a stubbornly kind and forgiving heart that ever only turns down the path of wrathful vengeance under strenuous circumstances.
competitive - once more another part of his nature designed perfectly for him, contests and battles are the understandable adrenaline rush providers to someone like him. he can sometimes become compulsive, but he generally reins in such wild desires. but his competitive nature, unbeknownst to him, may sometimes come as extremely persistent in its aggression. it can come off as intense and, at times, dominating. he has a strong, overprotective presence that he, with short-sight, only sees as his persistence to see a task through. but he sometimes forgets that people still do need that space - and that he also needs to take a step back from himself to step from being sometimes becoming obsessive.
realistic - he's generally fair in his assessments of trainers and people. he rarely hesitates to provide the proverbial slap in the face, particularly if someone else mistreats their pokemon (like certain people, due to a misplaced target of his frustration) or if someone is way in over their head. the news may not always suit others' expectations, but sometimes, the truth needs to be said. in this, he can be overbearing, almost forcing his opinion on others if they are simply blind to see what is clearly obvious in front of them. he's neither an optimist or a pessimist; he just believes that sometimes, a little tough love is what's needed to push forward.
judgmental - the catch of his subjective nature has both external and internal consequences. externally, this easily compliments those snippets of vanity that often prevents him from truly getting to know someone unless they greatly impress him upon first contact. it makes him dismissive in that sense, and more often than not, ticks quite a bit of people off. but this rein is generally held tightly, and unless someone comes off as too forceful and presumptuously puffed-up, nothing major is going to happen. internally, he's most judgemental about himself, often being self-critical under the usual showiness. but one is never the best doctor for oneself, and so despite constant evaluation, he is still naive of his own shortcomings.
PREFERENCES
- despite being a water-based trainer, he prefers the shore over the sea.
- coordinating is more than a hobby; it's a lifestyle, and he thoroughly enjoys it. the lack of it recently has affected his mood. he just needs a little push, though.
- he does enjoy battles, for only for those he deems fit. he's not out to challenge every single person he sees.
- he has a preference towards individuals who are both strong and strong-willed.
- he loves showing off in contests. it's probably gained him a few admirers and enemies each time he participates and wins.
- he holds a certain hostility towards the knights of arceus, both for the sake of winona and flannery.
- similarly with ruby, he dislikes those who misuse their pokemon.
- as with the very water in oceans, he can be relatively unpredictable, changeable with each passing day. thus, he doesn't quite appreciate forced into situations where he is limited, physically and emotionally.
- walking is rarely an option. he prefers using his air car.
- loud noises and places aren't quite his forte.
HISTORYsometimes, it just takes an apocalyptic catastrophe to instigate a re-evaluation of one's priorities... or perhaps two.
the first time it happened, the raging storms orchestrated by teams magma and aqua revolutionized a whole new meaning to the term wartime. as already unpredictable as living in a volcano was, it was incomparable to two murderous titans hell-bent on destroying the other, even if at the price of the entire hoenn region. luckily, the entire affair was ground to a ceasing halt by his disciple, ruby, and his fellow dex holder, sapphire. but such wide-scale conflicts never ended with rainbows and sunshine, and there was no reason for the norm to break now; the losses of lives were inevitable. unluckily for him, the conclusion of the calamity paid the price of the life of his close friend and the safety of the woman who so vehemently continued to demarcate their past and present.
steven stone, the hoenn league's champion, died in his arms after having relinquished the champion's cloak, utterly fatigued by the task he had bequeathed upon himself - a task too draining for one man to shoulder alone. a pokemon of myth should never be underestimated, after all.
winona, the fortree city's gym leader, had nearly died due to his own insensitivity. because of his lack of clarity and pride, she'd been taken into the greedy hands of two men whom he'd never forgive. they say one's life flashes before their eyes upon death. hers might as well have been his, after all.
luckily enough, these repugnant episodes were completely reversed by ruby's celebi, the time-traveling pokemon that had accompanied him from johto. the memories of their deaths had been rewritten and effectively forgotten, but under the strictest confidence, ruby had divulged the true outcome under the face of the jubilant epilogue. true enough, the memories had been rewritten and the old forgotten, but the sense of dread and loss had transcended simple humanistic understanding. even without ruby's explanation, there had been something painful nagging him, despite the underlying cause having being unknown. the feeling had become especially prevalent around steven and winona, and after ruby's story, he'd understood.
he'd understood the implications of weakness too well.
from that time on, for a few months, he experienced lapses in attention as he drowned in his avalanche of guilt. the mental stressors, however, rarely ever surfaced; he performed his duties as champion without a hitch, although a second's distraction would sometimes lead to a close call, victory-wise. but these triggers were just half of his worries. as an aftermath of the battle, his entire right side had been crushed by maxie and archie's attack. the bones healed eventually - it helped quite a bit that, no matter how short-lived, winona looked after him - but the damage to his eye was longer lasting. not so much sightless as it was a temporary trauma due to a blow to the head, all he could see through the impairment were blurs and colours. plagued now by both physical and mental scars, the champion temporarily resigned his position to seek recovery.
it took almost a year, but the results were more than satisfactory. having been almost obsessively fixated on recovering full sight, he was able to throw his concentration more into training and obtaining pokemon. at last, the guilt subsided. it never truly dissipated, but the levels were now diminished to a point where he could function normally. as well, his eye had healed substantially; he couldn't quite make out details as vividly as he had used to, but for its day-to-day usage, it would do.
time, after all, does not heal wounds. the wounds remain. in time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. but it is never gone.
he returned to his post following his sabbatical. it was relatively quiet for a few more years. the gym leaders were still up and about - his master, juan, had effectively taken over the sootopolis gym - and steven was nowhere to be found, as per usual. but as with the sea, typhoons would rage and agitate the placid waves. not too soon after his return, it seemed that the world had once more shaken hands with an implacable god.
and again, it was in the form of another corrupt team of humans.
the news streaming in from hoenn - and other regions - were electrifying. a wake-up call he neither desired nor hungered for, he learned very quickly of flannery's death. the gym leaders and the rest of the elite four were summoned by the director, warned of the new threat to humanity, and told to report in any new information as routinely as possble. if, after all, the elite four of another region fell, it could just as easily be a fate that would befall hoenn. yet here was another time of uncertainty, fear, and death.
wallace was more determined than ever to prevent a case of deja vu. training became more of a necessity than ever. with his new pokemon, he endeavoured to cover as many of his weaknesses as possible - an aggressive whirlpool stuck in its own obsession for perfection and strength.
but no amount of training could prevent the seemingly natural disasters that struck with lightning-fierce wrath on hoenn. apparently, the eerily similar catastrophes to the groudon-kyogre episode were destined to repeat themselves, regardless of much wishful thinking.
from ever grande, he raced back to sootopolis as quickly as he could. relieved that tranquility had more or less been warmly welcomed, the champion was able to sigh with relief at the normal state of things. a check-in with his master appeased his fears and, if anything, struck him with the first sense of nostalgia in a while. but the assuagement was temporary; if deja vu was the one thing he wanted to prevent, he wasn't off to a particularly smooth start - especially not when fortree city had fallen victim.
another all-nighter spent traveling, wallace was greeted with a horrendous sight of wreckage. though the damage was almost insubstantial in comparison to lavaridge, the carnage was not any less painful. almost surreal in its destruction, he'd scanned the city for that familiar figure in a streamlined flight suit, purple hair decorating her head. thankfully, he found her not long after, helping trainers out of her gym.
when the calamities had settled, wallace volunteered to stay and help rebuild the city. treated with her usual cool, professional disposition towards him, he worked under her to repair whatever he could. the unsaid entreaty to keep himself controlled and not overreach his boundaries in her turf was, at first, met with relative ease. but as old habits died hard, he'd slowly began to take control of smaller operations - such as the reconstruction of the irrigation systems. unaware of his own misgivings - particularly that of a one-sided power struggle of independence between himself and winona - he failed to recognize that, once more, he was trying much too hard.
the female gym leader's pent-up frustration never truly surfaced until an incident with a faulty plinth, eliciting the formation of a collapsed pit - with her just barely hopping out of the rubble. he'd rushed to her aid in a panic, but even the euphoria of a long-due reunion did not keep at bay her dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. while that particular building was not in his allotted area of responsibility, he'd felt guilty nevertheless. that, coupled with her following reprimand, plus the fact that he had once more almost failed to save her despite being in, more or less, a spitting distance, struck the final chord.
the epiphany could not be any clearer: the farther he stayed, the safer she was.
dejected but nevertheless determined, wallace stole out of the city to return to his post in ever grande. but sitting about doing nothing no longer satiated him, and once more, he'd taken leave in order to collect information about the new rumoured organization that had been at work, in hoenn and in the other regions.
currently, he is traveling hoenn and the neighbouring kanto, sinnoh, and johto for the sake of reconaissance. he coordinates with the other gym leaders - or attempts to - for more leads. every now and again, he checks in with steven (whenever he can get a hold of him), ruby (although he seems to prove even more flighty), the pokemon director (for updates and such) and juan (on the current state of affairs in sootopolis and hoenn in general).
OTHER
- in his travels, he doesn't make much contact with other unless necessary for information. the only regulars would be the nurses. battles are usually kept at a minimum, if only to keep himself and pokemon ready.
- he's only traveled to the nearer regions of kanto, johto and sinnoh. he hopes to visit unova one day.
- he doesn't participate in contests - not since he's left his champion post.
he's actually a little depressed about that. he did join in sinnoh when he dropped byand owned them.- there's something about the constant cheering that he misses. but the choice to leave behind his group of cheerleaders was necessary. he checks in every now and again, though.
wherefore art thou, rina, tina, gina, dina.- despite his insistence on staying away from her, there's a certain stubbornness towards her that just won't subside. in an unsuccessful attempt to cut - or at least diminish - ties, wallace actually has one of his cheerleaders infiltrate winona's gym as a trainer. she sends him reports sporadically.
- his eye still isn't fully healed. it's close to good as new, and one wouldn't be able to tell the difference. it's most discernable when objects traveling rather quickly enter a certain area in his field of vision, close to his face. because most pokemon attacks - or human attacks, for that matter - rarely come in close proximity, it's a virtually invisible dysfunction. in this blind spot of sorts, his reaction time of the foreign object is considerably slowed.
- he only ever shops in the regions' department stores, where he buys pokemon supplies and clothes
to keep him looking fabulous.- a secondary goal of his is to meet with the other dex holders. after having experienced ruby and sapphire's prowess with his own eyes, he wants to see how the others are and what their take on the knights of arceus is.
- he's left his champion's cloak in a safe at sootopolis gym. having left his post again, if temporarily, he doesn't believe he deserves to bring around such a regal accessory.
- he wants to one day visit mirage island with juan.
